REUD THE GMDEN
Eleele Happeuiugs
Mr. George S. Raymond visited
the Eleele school on Friday.
After school teas are becoming
very popular with the "Highland"
people. The Misses Hastie enter
tained at a tea on Friday afternoon
having as guests Mrs. Morse. Miss
Blue, Miss Grace Ing, Miss Esther
Ing, of the "Highlands" and Mrs.
Silva and Miss de Lackner of Ele
ele. Mr. Faul Isenberg was the guest
of Mr. Walter McBryde last week.
The Hilonian, at Port Allen, is
taking a thousand tons of sugar
and a thousand cases of pine
apples. Messrs. Ah Vet and Ah See en
tertained their friends at a Chinese
dinner Saturday night.
Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Hughes
gave a very enjoyable reception
Friday evening in honor of Miss
McLennan, of Papaaloa, Hawaii,
who is their house guest. Dancing
was a feature of the occasion, about
twenty couples taking part, The
guests were from near and far on
Kauai, and the merrv party in
cluded Mr. J. P. Cooke and Mr.
T. M. Church, of Honolulu.
Messrs. Church and Cooke, of
Alexander and Baldwin, Honolu
lu, were visitors o f McBryde
plantation last week.
The schooner Alumna, which
had been unloading intrate at Port
Allen for the past two weeks left
for Gray's harbor on Wednesday.
Miss de Lackner nurse at the
Eleele hospital, entertained Dr.
and Mrs. Waterhouse M r . and
Mrs. Alexander, Miss Wagner and
Mr. Failev at a very delightful
dinner party last week. Dainty and
orignal favors and place c?rds
were a great surprise and afforded
much amusement during the even
ing. Messrs. Morse and Alspaugh
were visitors m Waimea on Friday.
Quite a number of Eleele folk
went to the Koloa landing Sunday
to witness the airship program,
and, although disappointed in tt.
flights, had a very pleasant time
greeting friends from other places.
Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Morse, of the
Eleele school, entertained i n a
most delightful manner at their
home, Kalaheo, Saturday evening,
among the guests being the Misses
Hastie, and Messrs. Dillingham,
Eby and Miller.
Hanalei Wharf Shed
James Morse, foreman on wharf
work for the Harbor Commission,
has just completed a handsome
shed over the wharf at Hanalei.
The shed is fifty feet in length,
and will afford ample shelter for
freight and passengers making
that landing. The improvement
cost about $500.
Notice To The Public
It has come to our attention that
while operating The Garden Is
land newspaper, under a tem
porary agreement, M r . I? . B.
Bridgewater made a few subscrip
tion contracts for periods longer
than his term of lease. Any such
contracts were negotiated by Mr.
Bridgewater on his own account
and responsibility; The Garden
Island Publishing Co., Ltd.,
which re-assumed control of its
property on January 1, 1914, not
being, either directly or indirectly,
a party to such agreements.

Kalaheo Notes
The new two story addition to
the Kauai Fruit & Land Go's
cannery is about half way done.
Contractor Ichioka is hurrying the
work along and in the course of
wo or three weeks the entire
building will b e completed and
ready for the summer season com.
ing, which will begin about June.
A matrimonial affair took place
at the Kalaheo Catholic Church
last Sunday the 25th, Mr. Joe
Souza and Mary Medeiros, both
prospective homesteaders of Kala
heo, being the contracting parlies.
It is rumored that another wedding
will be solemnized in February and
one in each succeeding month till
December. These are certainly
some routine pranks, outlined by
Cupid and h i s priceless arrow.
Some one was heard to remark that
the Kalaheo Homesteads are a
great place for matrimonial
solemnizations.
Mr. J. P. Cooke and Hon. Paul
Isenberg were visitors at the Can
nery last week.
Mr. Wm. Feniandes amused the
Homesteaders at Kalaheo with his
new line of motion picture films
last Friday and Saturday nights.
Mr. W. D. McBryde, of Wahi
awa, and Miss Rath o f Lasvai,
were among those invited t o a
dance given by Mr. and Mrs. R.
L. Hughes, of Tort Allen, at their
home last Friday night. .
Long Hop Man, proprietor of
Hing Chong Store, of Lawai, was
the guest of honor at a Chinese
dinner given last Saturday night.
The table was set for twelve per
sons and all heartily enjoyed the
a la chop suey dish, etc., iir the
highest of spirit. Among those in
vited were: W. D. McBryde, J. P.
Kamanu-vai, J. W Rath, N A.
Akana, J. C. Jervis, F. L. Zoller,
M. Hamauku, M. Fernandes and
P. K. Palama.
Some Good Guessing.
Edward Macfie, of Makaweli,'
sends to The Garden Island a
copy of "Mother Shipton's Pro
phesies," an old manuscript, be
lieved t o have been written in
1448, in which the modern auto
mobile, telegraph and cable and
even the flying machine were pre
dicted. Read this:
"Carriages without horses shall
go,
And accidents fill the world with
woe!"
Then read this:
"Around the world thoughts
shall fly
In the twinkling of an eye!"
And this:
"In the air men shall be seen,
In white, in black and in green."
Of course the dear, old soul had
not heard of Tom Gunn, so she
did not ring in 'yellow," but she
scored three times, apparently, just
the same.
McBryde Heads Here
J. P. Cooke mid T. M. Churih, of
Alexander and Baldwin mid Paul Isen
berg came over in the Kiimu lust Wed
nesday on business with the alluirs of
McBryde. Sugar Company. Mr. Isenlierp
was first a guest of liis uncle, Kev. Hans
Isenberg, after which he joined the others
of the party at MeUryde. The visitors
went over the estate and conferral Ht
length with Manager Alexander in regard
to the physical rendition of the proper
ty. They also visited Makaweli. and
caught the Kinau at Xuwiliwili on Satur
day for home.
