lands, died in San Francisco today .
Solomon Mathews, pioprietor of Territorial House, was assault
ed last night by former soldiers and badly beaten up.

The ship W. F. Babcock, which holds the sailing record from
Honolulu to the east coast, is to be converted into a barge,
San Francisco The British steamer Cedriana arrived here yester
day with 750 refugees from Mauzauillo, Mexico. She reports the mur
der of a score of Americans and the capture of the American brig Ge
neva by a Mexican transport, and imprisonment of Americ m Consul
Edwards, at Acapulco. Rifle fire was directed at the Cedriana. The
Mexicans of the place seemed greatly angered at the Americans, and
seemed to understand that the capture of Vera Cruz, which they had
heard of, was the beginning of war between the United States and Mex
ico. Practically all Americans in that town have been forced to leave
their homes and seek refuge in ships in the harbor. The report adds
that the Geneva was afterward released and had sailed for Grey's har
bor. Washington It was learned yesterday that the real mission of the
Huerta delegates to the Peace Convention is to arrive at some plan for
pacifying Mexico and the establishment of peace in the country. Pre
sident Wilson and Secretary Bryan are reported to concur in this atti
tude and to be willing to assist it, if possible. The Huerta delegates
declined to accent the uuarters which had been arranged for them by

cards.
New York Former President Taft criticizes the administration for
showing favoritism to the Mexican rebels; but advises the American
people to support the policy of the government.

Complaint has been made against Circuit Judge Whitney, for
violating the traffic-ordinance, heleaviug his auto on the street sever
al hours at night without lights.
Secretary Thayer has stopped the work of registering Asiatic
children born in Hawaii.
In order to save the life of a Spanish child, running in front of
her auto, the wife of Captain McClosky turned her machine com
pletely over yesterday, injuring herself and friend.
Anderson Grace, the notorious negro soldier outlaw, has written
from Leavenworth prison to the United States court at Honolulu for
specifications of the chaiges against him, Grace killed a man at Pearl
Harbor.
Washington President Wilson and Secretary Bryan drafted a
strong communication to Huerta yesterday relative to Orderly Parks,
who is missing. No mention is made ot the course the United States
will mirsue if information is not forthcoming. So far Huerta has re
fused to supply any information whatever to the United States.
Rebels are now in complete control of Tampico and occupy Mo
nelovia.

Judge Hofgaard had a busy day
in the Waimea court yesterday.
First, a gang of Filipino gamblers,
from Camp S, Makaweli (arrested
Saturday night), were given vari
ous fines, amounting in the aggre
gate to $129. Four Japanese ar
rested Sunday night for the same
offense were evidently thought to
be quite wicked, for the sum of $70
was recoved from them.
