leaving the complete shaiv and
size of his s:nall foot behind. This
imprint corresponds to the foot of
Hong i'ai, ."nd this and other cir
cumstances lead the police to be
lieve that they have caught the
principal in both burglaries.
The word "principal" is used
for the reason that it is believed
there were others. Several circum
stances point to tile conclusion that
Hong Pai was not operating alone,
but. on the other hand, had one
or more assistants Fortunately for
the police, the prisoner is a dope
fiend. They intend to shut oil bis
supply of "dream medicine" un
til he tells all he knows of the for
mer burglary and names his con
federates in both cases. It is be
lieved that a tew days or weeks
without his poppy juice will bring
the Chinaman to terms, and he
"will tell it all."
At the time ot the f nuer bur
glary something like $200 wortli of
watches, $50 worth ot cigars and
other things were stolen. The
police believed that the miscreant
was either a Filipino or a Porto
Rican, basing their theory largely
on the foot-print above referred to
and also on the character of mer
chandise stolen. Sheriff Rice had
every house of Filipinos and Porto
Ricans in the neighborhood
searched and in addition, searched
the bnegage of a number of sus
pected steerage passengers leaving
for Honolulu. The Honolulu po
lice, were also notified to look out
for cheap watches over there. Al
though all th-'se precautie'iis were
taken, and mor.: v: -l.:iO ex
ponded bv tii,- p I'lic deinrtuu'iit
on the case, Mo'liing ever came of
it.
Great credit is coming to Sheriff
Crowell for the manner in which,
he handled the case. His susptc
ions proved well-grounded, and
his short work was crowned with
complete success.
The Income Tax Law
Has doubtless become a reality to a .
large number of men and women in the I
past month than in any time since its en-
actment. The last day tor filing the tax J
returns without loss or penalty has g
gone by. J
There are many people who put off I
until the last minute or later the doing :
of things which are to their own profit. I
If you are not yet one of our patrons your I
loss though not imposed by lav, is no 1
less real. !
While our merchandise and service are
up-to-date as we can make them, we con
fess that our business principles are cf the
old fashioned variety, which places your
satisfaction above the day's profit.
