Although no complaints to that

Thunder At Sea

Thursday night, experienced a
real, live storm at sea. Lightning
flashed about the little steamer and
thunder pealed frequently. Rain
came down i n blinding sheets,
driving all the deck passengers to
the saloon below, where the y

Thc meeting of the Mokihnna
Club on Wednesday is commend
ed as one of the best in its history.
After long- wandering about in the
Middle Ages, they have got down
to interest of-our own time, and
are now studying local civics.
The subject for the day, under
the leadership of Mrs. J. M. Lvd-
ate, was Vocational Training-
with dashing forays into the field
of school readers and national
politics.
.Some say that it was a particu
larly good meeting because two of
the main papers were contributed
by men, who were, however, not
permitted to read them.
The Golden Treasury Series of
readers came m for a large mea
siire of intelligent criticism.
Leading teachers, and others, had
been interviewed all over the Is
land, and the result of this sym
posimmvas an emphatic condem
nation of these readers for our
schools. .Some of the objections
were as follows: They are too dif
ficult, with many unusual words,
some o f which cannot be
found in anv ordinary dictionary;
the language is such as no ordi
nary child in these Islands will
ever be lncely to have occasion to
use, hence it is largely a' waste of
time for them to struggle with it;
a large amount oi the material con
sists of unfarmiliar stories from
Greek mythology, which have no
relation to the affairs ot ordinary
life.
These stories are fantastic and
unreal, tending to undermine and
confuse the childish devotion to
trui h and to destroy high ideals of
rectitude.
In this connection attention was
called to the need on the Islands
of readers suited to our local con
ditions Our children are entirely
ainformiliar with natural ice and
snow and skating; they know
nothing about oaks and clems, and
maples; deer, boars, foxes, etc;
etc, things that abound i.i the
mainland readers. We should
have, thought some, readers that
dei.l with familiar conditions
which our children can readily
understand. Such readers, it
-ceins, have been prepared for the
Philippines, with, great care, and
much intelligence, and they have
given great satisfaction there. If
we can't have readers of our own
perhaps wc might adopt those ot
the l'hilippiuespit any rate nothing
can be worse than the Golden
Treasury Series, seemed to be thc
concensus of opinion.
