FACTS. TO STEER BY'
The automobile builder shoots each year nearer
the perfed machine.
The model. 42 Oldsmobile expresses as never
before the mechanically perfedt car.
Standards surely advance, and the Oldsmobile
is standard in every respect -not merely the Stand
ard of medium priced cars, but the Standard set by
the beSt machines money can buy.
Distinction and highest quality is the reason
underlying the swift popularity of the little Olds.

Farthenuore the greater part of
our surroundings is part and par
cel of sugar estates over which we
have no control. However niuch'roads it is necessary to select sonie-
we .-Higjii jikc 10 improve or beauti
fy these surroundings we have no
risht to do so. Fortunately, how
ever, interested parties connected
with these sugar estates have
shown a very commendable inter
est in what may be called village
improvement ami have alrtady ac
complished so much in the direc
tion that it will be the part of
wisdom for us to co-operate with
them rather than attempt any ery
radical or ambitious work of our
own- Lack of resources also sug
gests this same modest program.
There are three particular items
of improvement which seem t o
vour committee worthy of atten
tion by wav of a start.
1. There are many places, where
the road-way banks have been cut
down leaving more or less unsight
ly crumbling precipices. It will
be difficult to clothe these ban.ks
but we would like to try the ex
periment of planting boiiRainvil
lias at intervals of sav 100 feet or
less along these banks, pulling
them in at the top and training
the long sweeping sprays down
ward as they grow. As an alter
native plan we would like to try
excavating pockets in the bank it
self part way up and filling it with
sood soil in which the bougaiu-
be planted. These
Pi experiments
as experiments have the
np,,roval j Mrs- enberg, who
'ias kindly arranged to furnish 100
rooted bouganvillias for this pur-
pose.

(plant anything in the way of tree
or shrub that would tend to ob
struct or unduly shade or shut in
the roadway. Also with our pre
sent exposure to loose stock oil the
thing that will be safe from such
molestation Hibiscus, e.g, however
desirable otherwise would be out
ot the question. Something handy,
also, that will stand a possible .
drought should be chosen. Two
candidates that seem to meet these
requirements would seem to be the
red -pepper capsicum a u d the
poinsctta. These planted at fre
quent intervals on each side of the
road would give a pleasing. artistic
touch to our roads.
3. Waste spaces, banks, dells, etc.
Here and there along our roads
there are such spaces which are
not available for cultivation, and
which are now grown up toweeds,
Bv arrancement with the owners
these could probably be .planted to
ornamental shrubs or trees such as
bougaiuvillia, poinsetta, Poinci
ana catharto carpus or Bauhinia.
After they wvre once well started
these would require little or no
attention, and so far as the trees
go would ultimately yield some
revenue in wood
The restraining element in any
such effort will be the lack of funds;
the simplest plans will involve
some expenditure.
We trust that when once well
started the supervisors may per
mit th road gang to care for the
road-side plantings as part of the
ordinary course of road repairs.
But for the initial planting, and
some care in the early stages, a
certain amount of expense would
be involved. It is to be hoped that
private individuals may be willing
to assist at lesst as far ns their own
territory is involved.
