Among tho post mortem explana
tions of the recent Republican de
feat in the National elections, (Jif
ford Pinchot is coming in for a good
share of blame.
5. Regarding tho result in Califor
nia, II. A, Walker, of San Francis
co, in a recent interview here, said:
"It has been so often remarked
that if the Republican presidential
candidate had not gone into the
State hi would have won that it is
useless to repeat it. That goes with
out saying. Rut there were other
circumstances. Mr. Pinchot prob
ably lost as man- votes to the Re
publican party as did the visit of
Mr. Hughes. It was not the fault
of the Republican speakers' bureau,
I am told, that Pinchot was sent to
California. The former forester of
the United States wanted to go there,
lie did not reckon that his ultra
conservation views would play hob
with the oil men of southern Cali
fornia, but that is just what hap
pened. "California was lost to the Re
publican party by less than 4, (XX)
votes. Pinchot cost the Republican
party more than 5,(XX) votes in the
southern part of Calitornia alone."
From Democratic sources the same
testimony comes regarding the dis
astrous effect on Mr. Hughess can
didacy of Mr. Pinchot's support.
Senator Thomas, of Colorado,
referring to it in a speech in the
Senate the other day, said:
"When Mr. Pinchot announced
his support of the Republican nomi
nee, and when the Republican com
mittee Dcrinitted him to circulate
his letter giving his reasons there
for, with his picture at the to) or
in the center of it, the heart of the
western Democracy beat high with
joy. The conviction in my section
of th country at once arose that, in
the event of the success of Mr.
Hughes, who was supported by Mr.
Roosevelt, Mr. Pinchot or Mr. Gar
field would probably be called to
administer the affairs of the Interior
or Agricultural Department or both.
As Democrats we utilized that situa
tion to the best of our ability; and
I want here to say that it gave us
thousands of votes in the State of
Colorado, and, I think, in other
public-land States which otherwise
might have gone elsewhere."
Republicans, in recalling that . it
was Mr. Pinchot's tale-bearing trip
across the ocean to pour into Col.
Roosevelt's ears stories regarding
President Taft, which resulted in
the party split in 1013, and the
loss of tlie Presidency, and now be
ing reminded that Mr. Pinchot's
activities lost California and the
Presidency to them in 1016, are be
ginning to consider him a somewhat
