London The Manchester Guardian expresses the belief thai Presi
dent Wilson lias been assured that neutral powers will follow the aetion
of the United States. It'stntes that it has reason to believe that the re
ply of lhazil is in harmony with the attitude of America.
Situation In Philippines
Washington -The crews of German ships interned in the Philip
pines attempted to wreck the machinery of their vessels, but the author
ities took steps to see that this was not done.
British Vessel Sunk
London The British steamer Eavestone has been sunk. It is ofli
eially announced that an American sailor was killed by the shelling of
the small boats while leaving the ship. The captain was killed and
three others were wounded.

Immigration Bill Passes
Washington The bill restricting immigration was yesterday passed
over the President's veto by a vote of 01 to 19.
Pershing's Men Return
General Pershing crossed the border into the United Slates yester
day at the head of 10,000 men.
Islands Student Dead
Cambridge Randolph Hitchcock, a son of "Hex" Hitchcock, of
Molokai, died here yesterday.
To Equip Many Men
LondonNewspaper men here believe that Germany will patch up
peace with America. It is reported that she has made overtures and
concessions to the Scandinavian nations.
France Again Heard From
Berlin The Germans have recaptured ground east of Beaucourt.
Tho British lost heavily.
Monday Altcrnoon
Berlin It is stated positively here that the determination is to en
force the plan of submarine warfare. This is absolute and final. The
chances of peace appear slight.
Aineriean Ambassador Gerard has practically decided to sail for
homo by way of a Spanish port.
German Merchantmen Seized
New York The navy authorities this evening seized seventeen Ger
man merchantmen interned in the bay. The crews were removed and
navy guards placed aboard.
The nolice are nuarding the German consulate.
The crews of German ships at Hobokon have been taken oil'. It is j
reported that they have wrecked the machinery of their ships. U. S.
marines have been placed on board.
