The appropriations for Hawaii
arc for the beginning of tin; con
struction of seacoast batteries in the
Hawaiian Islands for the mounting

funds for the protection, preserva
tion, repair, and maintenance of
existing fortifications; surveys for
stragetic roads in connection with
the hind defenses in the Hawaiian
Islands; the maintenance, opera
tion, and equipment of elect ric light
and power plants and searchlights:

Beach in front of Fort I)e Russy,
Hawaiian Islands; the operation
ami maintenance of lire control in
stallations; the construct ion of two-12-inch
railway howitzers, a n d
seven ft-int-h antiaircraft guns; the
alteration and maintenance of sea
coast artillery, including five snare
1 t-inch guns, the alternation of tin
carriages of six 1-1-inch guns to give
an angle of elevation of 20.
Hawaii Sugar Crop

The Department of Commerce has
received the following estimate of the
Hawaiian 1!H7 cane sugar crop as
follows: Hawaii Island, 211,'JOO
tons; Maui, 1."), :"" tons; Oahu,
132,(100; Kauai 111.070; total.
(:53,!20 tons'. This will exceed the
11)1( crop by nearly 50,000 tons
Sound Sailors Coining
Washington, I. C, Feb. 2 Un

will join with members of similar
organizations from Washington and
California, for a practice cruise to
Hawaii next July. The schedule
as it now stands proviihs that the
Oregon naval militia will leave Port
land July I, completing the maneu
ver work about August 3. It is ex
pected the militia will use the
cruiser New Orleans ami torpedo
boat destroyer ( ioldsborough ; the
Californians wilj use the battleship
Oregon, while the torpedo boat Far
ragut and the destroyer Hunting
ton; while the Washington men
will use the gunboat Yicksburg and
an armored cruiser. The cruise
promises to be one of the most pre
tentious in the history of the Coast
naval militia .
