OBSOLETE
EDUCATION
Editor of the Garden Island:
That article of j ours aliout "Ob
solete Education" certainly did
strike a "responsive chord" in my
experiences. I have a youngster who
is struggling with that sort of edu
cation, and I tell you, it is a- rain-
ful experience, both for him and I
for me.
Almost evcrj evening after supper
he suddenly remembers, what he
had forgotten all the afternoon
long, that he has some home work
to do, six problems in arithmetic.
After much hunting around for
pencil and paper and book, he set
tles down to work, and for, a- little
while everything is still; but pretty
soon I know that he isn't making
any headway by the way he sighs
and rubs out what lie has done. Ho
I come to his help and ask him
"What's the matter?" He says that
he can't understand this problem
and it won't come right. I go and
look over his shoulder. "Which
one?" And where he points, I
read, "if a man can do a piece of
work in ZVi hours and aloy can do
the same work in "Vi hours how
long will it take them both together
to do the same work I "
Now that looks simple doesn't it?
And with the confident assurance
of a tenderfoot I say, "Oh that's
easy ! " Let me have the pencil I "
and I take his place. But I soon be
gin to realize what a "hole" I am in ;
it isn't'easy, and after I have made
a few vain figures and read the
problem over about a dozen times I
get to know that it isn't easy, and
that it will take all the mind I've
got to get through' it. I try adding
the man and the boy, since they
are Joth working together, which
makes 11 hours. But on the face
of it that isn't right; besides it isn't
the answer given in the book, The
smallness of the answer in the book
suggests dividing the man into the
boy, which comes pretty near it.
But isn't quite right; and anyway I
couldn't tell why 1 divided, and
you always have to tell why you do
things in school; instinct doesn't
count..
Meantime my boy sits by, yawn
ing and impatient because he has
five more problems to do after that
one is pau. So I tell him to leave
that one and go on to the next.
The next is; "If 7 is 3-lths of
some number what is 14-lfiths of
the same number?" Now that sort
of thing I'm "onto"; so I say,
"What you want to do, is to find
what one 15th is, and then it will
be 14 times that. If seven is three
loths what is one? "Ohyesl" he
says and tries to divide 7 by 15.
"No, no! if 7 is 3. what is one?."
Then he divides 15 by 7. "No, no!
you dunce, don't you know .how to
get one third of a thing? 3 into 7! "
By this time he is so rattled 4hat lie
can't divide 3 into 7 and make it
come right. And then he begins to
guess, wildly and hopelessly; and
I am getting more and more wrought
up, until I can hardly keep mv
hands off him. Finally I have to j
do it for him. "Now what?" I
ask him. lie doesn't know any
more than the man in the moon.
And when I tell him to multiply
by 14 he says you can't do it ;
anyhow ho can't do it; and he can't

I War Revenue Taxes to
Be Paid by Sugar
Sonic time ago wc made a rough
forecast of' the excess profits tax
which some of our more flourishing
plantations would be called on to
pay under the new law, which went
into force the first of July of this
year. One of the Honolulu papers
lias gone into the matter more fully,
making some applications that will
be a surprise to those who have not
given the matter much attention.
Some 22 of the more popular and
well known concerns have been tak
en, and figuring on the basis of last
years profits, the aggregate excess
profits of these places will run to
more than 4 million dollars. In
one phenomenal case that of Ha
waiian Commercial' the tax will be
nearly 87o,0(K). Even McBryde,
it is figured, will have to pay over
82('.(.0(M).
It is quite possible, uay even
probable, that the aggregates will
be even higher than these figures
indicate, since in many cases the
1917 crop will be larger than that
of 1 010, and tlmre is every assurance
that the prices will be higher.
for a fact! And then he begins to
cry. And I can't stand it any
longer, and I burst out, "Oh you
snivelling little dunce you, you'd
better go to bed! " Which he does,
and finally sobs himself to sleep.
. I sit there a while, staring at that
man and boy, i who have undone me
and discredited me by working to
gether ; and wishing that I could lay
hands on them. I would fix them
so they would 't work together or
any other way ! Finally I get wrought
up to the point of action. I will go
to school in the morning and tell
them what I think of the kind of
stuff they are dealing out under the
name of education, addling the brains
of the children and burning out the
tempers of their parents.
So, next morning I go to the
school along with the boy and tell
the teacher how he isn't to blame
for not doing the work; that its
stuff that no ordinary, live boy,
with good red blood in him can be
expected to do; and that, as far as
I am concerned. I don't want him
to do it, and that it's beyond him.
And the teacher says it isn't be
yond the Oriental children : she has
little Japs, not half the size of my
boy, who do them as easy as roll
ing off a log. And anyhow it's on
the course of study, and they have
to teach it whether they want to or
not; and what am I going to do
about it? And after some more talk,
on both sides, that doesn't seem to
help my case, I go home not very
sure that I have got anywhere, but
still very much dissatisfied with the
things that my youngster has to
learn and with what they call the
Course of Study.
I understand, Mr. Editor, that
they are experimenting with a new
kind of school, a sort of advanced
kindergarten where children don't
have to study anything that they
don't want to, and everything is
play, and games, and outings, and
stories; and even arithmetic is learn
ed by counting up the scores in out
door games And there is absolute
ly no home work to be done. I
don't understand exactly how that
is possible; it seems too good to be
true; but if it is, that is the kind of
education for me and my boy.

A Party to Napali
A party of adventurers, to the
numlier of ten, under the leader
ship of Dr. Dunn of Makaweli, left
Saturday afternoon, August 4, for
Milolii and the Napali Coast.
On getting out they found that
there was rather more of a swell
than they had realized on shore and
this afTected some of the party so
unhappily that it was found neces
sary, at their urgent and piteous
request, to land at Mana and put
them ashore from where they work
ed back home, quite satified with
what they had enjoyed.
The seasoned balance then press
ed on for Milolii, which they were
naturally anxious to reach before
dark, but when they got there they
judged that it was too rough to land
with safety, so they had to go on to
Nuololo. By the time they got
there it was already dark, and it
was with much difficulty and no
little danger that they made the
landing.
Next morning they returned to
Milolii where they landed without
difficulty, the sea having moderated
during the night. They spent
most of the day there, securing an
abundance of fish and a good many
goats. They returned to civiliza
tion in the late afternoon.
Their emphatic advice is; take
a pilot along; 'someone who knows
tho Coast; and don't try to make
any landing at night.
