Among the Schools
Tlic Liinio public schools liave
started off this year with enthusiasm
find with every assurance of an en
tirely successful session. Owing to
the war conditions there has ben
sonic difliculty and delay about
securing the teachers required for
our steadily growing schools. Men
toachrrs in particular, have been
hard to get, so that manual training
and gardening may suffer somewhat ,
but even here, as else where the
ladies will doubtless make good.
THE LIHUE SCHOOL
The enrollment this year is 583,
which is about 45 more than last
year. These are distributed as fol

It has long been the intention to
move the school up to the Iluleia
plantation where most of the chil

and it still is. As it is, in bad
weather the school is on one aide of
an impassible stream and the chil
dren on the other.

One new room has been added
this year. For lack of gardening
facilities the school will be handi

will make up for this in sewing in
which it is strong. For this how

or two will be needed.

Including the principal there are
15 teachers. There should by rights
be at least one more teacher; in the
first grade there are 95 small child
ren who dovnot know a word of
English in the care of one teacher;
that will tax the wits and the in
dustry of any two teachers whoever
they may be; it is out of the ques
tion to do the work with one. Ef
forts are leing made to secure a
room in the Camp or elsewhere
outside the school for the better ac
commodation of these children;
and then efforts will be made to
secure another teacher for them
It is worthy of note that Kapaa
has, what many of the schools lack,
I a fair sized 8th grade; it also has a
large 7th grade, the largest by all
odds there has ever been on the Is
land. This gives the assurance of
a fine 8th grade for next year, and
