TONIO CAN'T READ BUT WILL
TAKE NO CHANCES ON JOB
Tonio staggered along with tho
two sign boards under his arm. He
felt very proud. Had ho not been
chosen from the gang to perform this
special mission? Tonio wished he
knew what they meant If he could
only road English! Ho was to place
one at each end of the hugo bridge.
Ho stood on tho bridge now. Near
ly a quarter of a mllo long it was,
with tho big river sparkling beneath.
Tonio leaned far over tho rail to
onjoy the sight, and in tho act drop
ped ono of tho beautiful signs. The
blue water caught it and held it, dan
cing, for a moment, far, far below,
then swept It from vlow. Hero was
trouble! Tell tho boss? And per
haps loso tho job that brought the
good monoy? Never!
Tonio was a man of resources as
ho himself often reflected. Graspini
tho remaining signboard firmly, he
walked half way across the bridge
and nailed tho board firmly on a pil
lar conspicuausly. Then ho stood
back and admired tho effect.
And later, vehicles which crossed
passed a board on tho rail in tho cen
ter of tho bridge which read, "This
bridgo is not safe. Trucks or any
vehicles heavily laden must not
cross." Motor Life.
