I :i I Steps have been taken by the Quartermaster General to prevent all waste of foodstuffs In the United States army and to reclaim and sal vage all worn out und castoff mater ial. It Is believed that the new Div ision of Conservation and Reclama tion will accomplish a large saving of war supplies and expenditures by the government, as well as provide for more satisfactory disposition of gar bage and manure. The British, French and other Allied countries have Insti tuted similar services with gratifying results, and the recommendations which were sent to the War Depart ment for tho establishment of such a service In the American Army em body the methods of operation in these countries. Tho method of handling food waste from messes will be of particular in terest to those at home who are sav ing food for the boys "over there." This new plan will not restrict the amount of food that they may eat but It will save much that was form erly lost through carelessness. Each organization of tho army which con ducts a "mess" hall will bo required to make tho following seperations of kitchen waste produced in the pre paration and service of each meal: Dread, which will include all bread stuffs unfit for human food. It will be dried and sacked for delivery. Cooked Meat, which will Include all meal gathered up from the ludi vidual plates after meals. Raw Foods and Meats, Which will include the trimmings, and raw scraps rejected tor use as food, and meat condemned by health authorities as unfit for human- consumption. Cooked Grease, which will include ill grease discarded as being of no further value as human food. Bones, which will include all bones discarded in the preparaton and use of human food. Other Garbage, which will include ill unsalable portions of food not otherwise classified, but will not In elude coffee grounds, glass, or other substances injurious for use as food for animals. All of those articles, except "other garbage" will bo weighed at tho kitch en and a statement of tho quantities of each will be forwarded to the camp conservation and reclamation officer t the time this material Is collected The Food Division of the Medical Department will work very closely with the Reclamation and Conserva turn Division of the Quartermaster's Corps. The Nutrition Officers of the Food Division will take care of the inspection of foods and rations with special reference to nutritive value and conditions of storage, and will cooperate in tha reduction of waste in preparation, watte in service and the prompt utilization of food not served Theso officers will cooperate with the Conservation and Reclamation Office with reference to the best classifica tions seperation and disposition of wastes from food. Tho Reclamation and Conservation branch of the Quartermaster's Corps will tilso have active charge of farm ins and garden operations for each camp, cantonment, army post and gen oral hospital. Tho produce raised, if of suitable quality, will ho used in rationing troops and foraging animals, Theso agricultural operations will be supervised by experts from the 1'nited States Department of Agriculture. It is extremely interesting to note how thorough tho Quartermaster Ceneral Department has been in Its selection of labor available for active duty for this agricultural service. Those who will conduct this work are in terned nlien enemy prisoners, draft men disqualified for oversea service conscientious objectors and military prisoners. In addition, enlisted nic phy.sicully unsuited for duty overseas or partially disabled will preferably he assigned for this agricultural service. Tho Quartermaster General's Depart nient believe that after a few months of outdoor work many of theso men will so improve physically that they will become fit for transfer to lighting units. In addition, the Conservation and Reclamation Division wll have author ity to operate laundries and provide a uniform method of turning over clothing, shoes and articles of equip ment by unitsupply ujlicers to the Conservation and Reclamation Ser vice for repair, dry cleaning, or disin fection. Not only is the Army keeping step with tho times, but it Is blazing the trail for conservation and reclama tion of our potential resources. The thoroughness evinced by the Quarter master's Corps in this new work will out-German tho much - boasted Ger man elliciency. The boys at the front and at the camps and cantonments in this country, are setting a pace in conservation whiih those at home In this 4 PLANT MORE CORN. There are at present a few plant ings of corn on Kauai that promise to help us out of the present short age of substitutes. This Island Is far from self-sup porting as regards to corn and next ear everybody that has a piece of vacant land should attempt to plant some of this grain. Walter D. McBryde of Homestead. planted a large field of corn this year and although the crop suffered con siderably from the ravages of pests, it looks as though it would yield fair ly well. Joseph Bento of Wahiawa, has five acres of corn that will probably yield one ton to the acre. This field Is al most entirely free from insect pests or disease and the ears are well filled IJento's strain of corn has been devel lied by himself and as a result, he has produced a good leafhopper re sistant plant bearing nn ear similar to some of the types of Kula corn raised on Maui. Bento will select a large number of ears for seed pur pose and those desiring to further tho production 'of this deserving variety of corn, can obtain seed from him in short time. There are other plantings of corn n the vicinity of iianaiet mat iook promising. In a few weeks from now most of the corn on Kauai will be harvested. The Honolulu market price for corn has dropped from $100 per ton to $85 during the past month ind a further drop in price may be expected. This Is due to the arrival In the market of large shipments of lawaii and Maui corn. Kauai corn planters should try to get their corn in earlier next year and thus get their crop marketed before he bulk of the Maul and Hawaii corn knock the bottom out of the market. Late planting Is justified on Maui and Hawaii, because most of the corn raised on these Islands is raised at comparitively high altitude, where early plantings would suffer from cold weather. Kauai planters are not ac customed to plant corn on such high levels as the planters on Maui and Hawaii, therefore earlier planting and in consequence earlier harvesting, should be expected here. By earler planting the leafhopper and. aphis might also bo avoided to a great ox-tent. The best time for planting differs considerably for different localities and by refering to past experiences, consulting with the neighbors and the County Agent, the time for plant ing can he determined for each lo cality. In some of the sections on the dry side of this Island, November plantings of corn might be recom mended and there are many places near the sea level where December plantings would be successful, hut probably the greater number of places would demand a planting season run ning from January 15th to April 1st. The foundations of do mocracy lies in tho individual initla live of its people and their willingnes to serve the Interests of tho Nation with complete self-effacement. In a time of emergency, tho civilian pop ulation as well as tho army must yield to discipline. Together we must work in solving the food problem and the other problems of conservation and reclamation. In doing so, we will have demonstrated the steadfastness of our faith and our ability to defend ourselves without being Kulturized by the Prussian "All Highest." iP ml Distributors l Ilk TERRIT0RY 0F HAWAII fjjJM
