HUBERS TALK 10
THE TEACHERS
Dintrict-Attorncy Huber's address
before the Teachers' Convention last
Friday was substantially as follows:
"Mr. Chairman, Teachers of Kauai,
and their Friends: I come before you
this morning In no official capacity
and not as United States District
Attorney, but as one of you: or at any
rate as one who understands and ap
preciates your work and your prob
loms. I have been a teacher for many
years; In the ordinary district school
in the High School, and Anally as city
superintendent I came to understand
the problems of the teachers from all
sides. And instead of talking war,
and war problems to you this morning
I am going to speak on teaching and
school problems.
How to Teach
Patriotism
The letter of invitation from your
secretary suggested that perhaps I
might give you some help as to how
to teach patriotism in the every-day
work of your schools, and I think per
haps that will be as good a theme as
I can take.
"To begin with, I don't think you
ought to teach patriotism as a sepa
rate entity as you would arithmetic
or history, or hygiene. Nor should
you make it a part of civics, or ethics
or history, and wait till you reach
that belated stage In education. But
you should make it a part of your in
struction all the way through from
the lowest to the highest grade.
Just One
Kind
"Sometimes we are told that" patriot
ism is of two kinds, instinctive and
intellectual, but this is a mistake. It
is stirred in different ways, It works
out in different ways, but there is
only one kind of patriotism, the love
of country and devotion to it. It is
just the same as in religion, men are

brought into the religious life In dif
ferent ways. Some, through the ap
peal to the emotions, like the great
crowds that hit the sawdust trail un
der the ministrations of a Sam Jones
or a Billy Sunday. But there are also
very many other men who come to
the same wise conclusion as the result
of careful consideration under the
temperate and rational teaching of a
quiet minister. The means of getting
quiet ministry. The means of getting
same.
"Now whether you reach your child
ren through the emotions, or through
the intellect, or both, the thing that
you want to Impress on them la that
they are part of the Country, that It
is not yours or somebody elses, but
theirs.
Devotion as Well as
Love
"We hear it said sometimes that
patriotism is two fold in another way;
that it is love of Country and de
votion to Country. But the devotion
is the natural and necessary outcome
of the love. It isn't love if it doesn't
imply devotion. Wo must show our
love for our Country. And we may
do this in these three ways: 1st. By
obeying her laws.. There is nothing
more vital and more Indlspenslble to
good citizenship than a reverent re
spect for law, and an implicit obedi
ence to it. The man who is Indiffer
ent or negligent, or defiant towards
the laws of his Country is a traitor
to that Country Just as much as Bene
dict Arnold was. Impress upon the
children that these laws are their
laws, and therefore they must abide
by and render all respect to them.
2nd. By supporting her institutions.
This means not only by exercising the
rights and privileges of the franchise;
voting intelligently and faithfully at
the elections, but it means standing
by the officers we elect, and strength
ening their hands in every way that
we can, the sheriff, the supervisors,
the various officers of law and order
and efficiency. In a country like ours
there are many Interests demanding
our support, especially at this time,
The Liberty Loans, the War Saving
Stamps, the French orphans, the Red
Cross, etc, etc. In supporting these In
terests we are working tor the govern
ment; we are supporting the govern
ment. Character a Resultant "
of Forces
J. A. Froude has a very suggea
gestlve essay on the Science of His
tory, in which he develops the truth
that a man's course of action is a
resultant between the contending
forces of right and wrong. That if the
force pulling him down is represented
by 5, his actual course will be away
by 10, and the force pulling him up,
below the horizontal and he will go
down. Now to apply this, we are told
that a child is the result of his en
vironment. He thinks as everybody
around him does. He talks as every
body around him does. He does as
everybody around him does. On the
other hand it is said that a man is the
architect of his own destinies. Here
you have the two contending forces,
and the outcome, will depend on the
relative strength of these forces.
Yours is the opportunity and the priv
ilege to build up the force of the In
herent power that makes for inde
pendence and personal initiative.
so that the child may rise superior to
his environment.
"Froude goes on to define right
and wrong. Right is the sacrifice of
selfishness to good, and wrong is the
sacrifice of good to selfishness. You
must teach the children which Is the
right and which Is the wrong. But
you will say, "Conscience does that."
Oh no, not at all. What conscience
does Is to urge you to do the right as
you know it, but it doesn't make
clear what that right is. The old
Puritans were blessed with most
rigorous and exacting consciences
that gave them no peace or rest till
they burned their witches, because
they thought that was the right thing
to do.
Development of the
Sense of Right
