A Creditable Book
With the American Ambulance in
France, by Dr. Judd, is a very graphic
and interesting little book on war ex
periences in France, which overy ono
ought to have. By a happy combina'
tion of personal narrative and the
war experiences of some of tho wound
ed patients, a very graphic picture is
given with the high lights and deep
shadows of realism. Familiarity with
the language of the country, superior
Intelligence, and special advantages
such s the ordinary soldier doe3 not
have, fitted Dr. Judd .for authorship in
a special way, and he has turned out
a very good book, thaf you will bo
glad to read, and that will give fresh
light on the war, oven though you may
have read scores of othor and more
pretentious books.
One little coincidence will bo read
with surprise and may be mentioned
hero. "Casting about for a French
tutor to tone up his French, the doc
tor found that the house keoper's
daughter gave lessor. She was a
buxom French girl of 19 with a per
feet American nccent.
"Where did you learn to speak'Eng'
llsh so well," we asked her.
"Oh, I went to school In America
for eight months."
"In what part of America were you?"
"I was in Honolulu at the Punahou
school."
Returning from Australia tho family
had stopped off at Honolulu for that
length of time and she had learned
her English there.
