THE GARDEN ISLAND, TUESDAY, AUG. 12, 1919
Mrs. Burke Vindicated
The famous Knpua school case
has ended with complete vindi
cation from Sirs. Katheriuc
Burjic, the principal, upon whom
charges were preferred sarnie time
ago. In reviewing the case the
the Star-Bulletin of August (ith
. says: Mrs. Kutherine M. Burke,
formerly principal of Kapaa
school, is not guilty of the charges
made against her by teachers of
that school. Thin was the decision
made by (he board of school com
missioners, after a hearing of the
lase which began on Monday
morning and lasted until after 2
o'clock this morning. Mrs. Burke's
usefulness at Kapaa, however, is
nt an end, it was determined, and
she will be transferred to some
other school and no reduction of
pay.
The teachers who made the
charges against Mrs. Burke were
declared guilty of conspiracy by
the commissioners and the system
which they used to record her
faults is considered as espionage.
Each of the teachers will receive
a reprimend, and 1). Prigge, who
is considered as the ringleader,
will be demoted as a result of his
action.
Mrs. Burke was given an oppor
tunity to testify in her own behalf
yesterday afternoon and last even
ing, and blamed the trouble large
ly upon Mr. Prigge, who is voca
tional instructor under her juris
diction. Testimony yesterday
brought out the charge that Mrs.
Burke had called Uenrv W. Kin

ney, formerly superintendent of
public instruction, a pinhead, and
stated that he had gone to Japan
because he was afraid to appoint
a principal at Makaweli.
In regard to the decision made
by the board of education, Sup
erintendent Vaughan MacCaughey
said : "While perhaps Mrs. Burke
was at fault at times and while
her attitude to her superiors may
have been rude and overbearing,
nevertheless the commissioners
felt that all the evidence against
her was prepared by the teachers
under the direction of the ring
leader. But there is no question
as to the fact that she will no
longer be successful at Kapaa and
must be transferred to one of the
other islands. The case has been
a source of trouble on Kauai for
some time and the entire commun
ity lias taken sides. It is settled
now and the public hearing has
cleared the atmosphere.
Miss Carrie Thompson has been
reappointed as principal of Maka
weli school. The school commis
sioners at their meeting decided
that the so-called charges against
this principal were without foundation.
