THE ROOSEVELT MEMORIAL
We are now in the midst of the
Roosevelt Memorial drive. If you
are an Advocate of upright
straightforward principles and
honesty, if yon believe in the pol
icy of doing things when they need
to be done, if yon believe in the
ideals of Americanism which gives
the young man nn opportunity
equal with his fellows, then you
are an admirer of Roosevelt, for
these are the tilings which he ad
vocated. Your contribution is
not to be forced. You are to give
because you want to give, and be
cause you want to keep alive the
qualities of courage, energy, love
of fair play, love of country and
unselfish service which were the
great American's. The coining gen
erations will look upon the mem
orials which your gift will help to
erect, knowing that their fore
fathers held in esteem the attri
butes which make this country
what it is and which have been so
ably re resen ted in the life, of
Colonel Theodore Roosevelt. Ha
waii's birthday remembrance to
Roosevelt will be her quota of .?2"y

will be !:.5.(I00. Come up with your
share.
purpose of this public organizat
ion, to stimulate and spread, int
erest in public affairs, and twenty
eight will spread it farther than
three or four.
In a way some of the commit
tees are like life preservers or
lire extinguishers that are seldom
wauted but are very important
when thej are wauted.
Mostly they justify themselves
by being there. When some danger
threatens the interest or welfare
of Kauai it is a mighty good thing
to have a regular committee to
refer it to. And as a rule the com
mittee handles it effectively wit
ness the good work done by the
Homestead Committee, the Public
Parks Committee, the Harbors
Committee, etc.
Iwenty -eight corunmtees are
none too many. They have done
good work in the past; they will
do better in the future.
A VALUABLE ASSET
Xo one who participated in the
banquet session of the Chamber of
Commerce the other evening at
AYaiinea could fail to be impressed
with the importance and value of
that institution as the guardian
and promoter of the interests and
welfare of the Island. It was a
reassuring and inspiring sight to
see so many of the responsible
men of the Island gathered there,
and animated bv so general and

with a generous recognition of
what she lias done for them.
In addition to being an intelli

Lihue Gives Assurance
XOXE TOO MAXY
There are tweuty-eight commit
tees of the Chamber of Commerce
which some people think is
about twenty-tive too many. That,
however, is surely a mistaken
point of view. To have twenty
eight responsible men chairmen of
committees, who will take a reas
onable interest in the various mat
lers assigned to them, is surely
better than to have one man at
tend to ibctii, however capable and
ellicient he may lie. On general
principles twenty-eight men will
do inure work than one.
Furthermore this is partly the
The following letter addressed
to the Chamber of Commerce, will
speak for itself in the matter of
the assurance required in connect
ing up the south side of the Island
with the Nawiliwili harbor:
"At a special meeting of the
board of directors of The Lihue
Plantation Company, held today,
I was authorized and directed to
inform your body that the Comp
any will extend its railroad to Sa
wiliwili when the harbor project
i. sufficiently advanced to insure
its completion and provided that
the Company obtains the proper
right-of-way.
"The above information and as
surance of The Lihue Plantation
Company, Limited, to serve your
body when taking up for consider
ation the request of the Governor
of Hawaii regarding railroad con
nection required by the Federal
appropriation for the Nawiliwili
Harbor project.
