HEW ARE OF
EXTRAVAGANCE
In these days of high prices,
big wages, larger returns, and
general inflation there is the most
urgent need for economy, thrift,
and business sanity.
If returns are large, this is the
time to lay them by for the future;
if money comes easy, this is the
timtt to take care of it against the
day when it will not come easy.
If, in a period of abnormal pros
perity we lose our heads, and de
velop habits of extravagance that
far outrun that period, and under
mine business character for life,
then prosperity has become a dis
aster to us.
Let us beware of extravagance
when it is so easily acquired; let
us beware of speeding up on this
down grade of prosperity, where
the going is good and the roadwaj
is slick; let us keep our hands on
the brakes or there will be a smash
up wheu the turn comes, as come it
will.
Iu this connection we would call
the attention of our readers to the
campaign now on, beginning Jan.
17, which will seek to emphasize
and commend the homely duties
and responsibilities of economy
and thrift.
yome of the themes which will
be brought home to the public
attention will be, the value of a
bank to the community; Own
your own home; Take out life in
surance for the beueflt of your
family; Pay your bills promptly,
etc.
OPES A BASK ACCOUST
"Lest thieves break through and
steal." There can be little incen
tive to economy and thrift where
there is no assurance of being able
to keep the proceeds of the same.
The man who has denied himself
and worked hard to save a hund
reddollars, and keeps it under the
bed in an old trunk, or in a jar
hid under the mango tree and
finds it gone some day, he regrets
the folly of his thrift and quits
on it.
Blessed be the bank that not
only takes care of your money
but allows you a small interest
on it, and you know just where to
find it when you need it.
A bank account is a hostage to
self respect, an incentive to thrift
an inspiration to public spirit
and patriotism, a guarantee of
independence and a mighty con
venient thing to have in the house
Start one right away, and you
will never regret it.
you no longer have to keep your
nose to the grindstone; it mean
that you can take advantage of
the opportunities for investment
and for bettering your condition
that are so manifold in our coun
try, and nowhere more manifold
than iu Hawaii.
Earn and save and build up a
competence, and every dollar that
you put away will be guarantee
of independence and influence.
IS SURE SOW
One never knows what is going
to happen. It is manifestly the
duty of every man to protect the
and well-being of those dependent
on him by means of life insurance.
And the time to insure is not near
the end when the risk is great and
the rates are high, but early in
life.
The young man, with few obli
gations, can generally carry the
burden of a reasonable insurance
and never feel it; never miss the
trilling sum that he pays in, an
annual premium, ne would have
squandered it anyway in some
foolish extravagance.
Life insurance is fine training
for a young man. It is an incent
ive to thrift and economy, and de
velops a sense of responsibility.
He remembers that he has to meet
his insurance payment, or lose his
investments, it stimulates him to
save it makes a man of him. And
even though he never got back a
cent of compensation from his in
surance, it would still be a good
investment because it has devel
oped habits of thrift, economy aud
responsibility.
Finally, insurance is what it
purports to be an insurance for
the future. No young man should
incur the obligations and respon
sibilities of a home aud family
without making the very best pro
vision possible for the safety and
well-being of that family. Aud
no girl should say "yes" to any
young man who does not carry
or who will not carry u life insurance.

COFFEE CONSUMPTION
EARS ASD SAVE
This is National Thrift Week
and throughout the length and
breadth of the land the duties and
the benefits of thrift are being
emphasized and we too may well
heed the injunctions thereunto.
A hand to mouth existeuce, liv
ing up to your income, with noth
ing put aside as capital or for
an emergency, means that you
are the servant and the victim
of circumstances, and can never
be the master of those circum
stances. Money, ahead means independ
ence; it means that, in a measure
at least, you are a free man ; that
when you can no longer stand
galling or oppressive conditions
you can get out; it means that
The United States Consumes more
than half of the coffee produced in
the world, and consumes more than
ever before in spite of the fact that
coffee is now three times its normal
price.
The per capita consumption
this year will run at about 12 pounds
against five pounds 50 years ago. The
average import price is 22 cents now
as against nine centsa year ago. The
coffee bill paid to the producing coun
tries by the United States this year
will be about 250 million dollars, while
the consumers will pay probably twice
that amount for what they drink. The
lion's share of the import price goe3
to Brazil.
