A Dead Sea Power Plant
An interesting plan is being discuss
ed to utilize the great sink of the Dead
Sea as a power plant site. The Dead
Sea is some 1400 feet below the level
of the Mediterranean, and a tunnel of
some 37 miles in length is proposed to
convey the water to the Dead Sea
sink where it would have a big fall
down the steep slopes of the same.
This tunnel would run Immediately
Jerusalem and would carry about 20
tons of water per second and would de
velop on a conservative estimate some
40,000 horsepower, with the assured
never ending supply of the oceans of
the world behind it. One might sup
pose that there would be danger, in
time of filling up the Dead Sea sink,
pouring such a body of water into it.
isut tne engineers say there is no
danger the Jordan river has been
pouring into it through all the ages
and has had no effect on It. The ut
most that it can do Is to raise the
level a few inches in the wet season
when the river is high, a gain that Is
soon lost in the dry season. The fierce
heat of that whole region evaporates
the water rapidly.
The power generated by this enter
prise would be used in various ways.
For the production of lime-nitrate
from the air; for supply of light and
power to the whole land of Palestine;
for the production of salt from the
soa water, and, most Important f all,
for pumping water out of tho Jordan
Valley onto the surrounding fertile
country for Irrigation.
It is estimated that a tunnel 10x13
with the necessary power-plant equip
ment would cost perhap3 60 million
dollars. It is considered by eminent
engineers to be perfectly feasible, and
financial authorities are confident
that it would be financially successful.
COSMOPOLITAN CENSUS TAKERS
There are twenty-two young citiz
ens of the United States busy with the
1920 Census of Kauai County this
month, and they are a cosmopolitan
bunch. The enumerators although
they are all good, loyal, Americans,
have quite a varied assortment of ac
cents and complexions, never-the-less,
as the following summary, showing
their ancestry, will indicate:
Scotch , 3
But, in spite of the varied racial ele
ments, they all have the best interests
of Uncle. Sam close to their hearts, and
are working like beavers to make
sure of including every inhabitant of
the County that Is legitimately a resi
dent of Kauai or Niihau, and to com
plete the population census before the
end of the month, along with a full
lint of the farms in the County, as well
as much oOier data.
The census of manufacturers will be
taken after the population -enumeration
