Growing. Kelp A
New
Industry
The cultivation and growth of sea
weed is one of the new industries of
America, the outcome of the scarcity
of potash, which seems likely to abide
as a permanent enterprise.
Southern California thus far Is the
principal seat of the industry as this
is the sea region where the kelp
thrives the best. Some half a million
tons of the seaweed are harvested
annually, the aggregate of three or
four cuttings.
The kelp grows best in a depth of
about 75 feet, where it grows to a
length of 100 to 150 feet, being kept
upright by air vessels, one at the base
of each leaf. The cutting machines
are lowered into the water and cut
the crop of kelp at a uniform level,
which then grows up again towards
the surface. The cut Is then trans
ported to the factory where it is burn
ed for potash and Iodine.
A new industry in America, it is a
very old one in Japan. There the
cutting is done by female divers with
sickles, but even in this laborious
way large quantities are collected.

COCK-FIGHTING MUST GO
The one Filipino national amuse
ment, vice and extravagance, cock
fighting, is in danger of extinction In
the Philippines. A bill has been Intro
duced in the Legislature there to grad
ually extinguish the sport by limiting
the days when It may be indulged In,
and making it a prison offonse at other
times.
The restriction lines are to be drawn
tighter and tighter, year by year, until
by 1930, it will be entirely banished.
With no cock-fighting the Filipino will
find little to live for.
