At the annunl mooting of the Ha

The experiments were conducted
by E. T. Westly, at Paauhau, Hawaii,
and seem to uhow pretty conclusively
that cane two days old loses from 3
to 9 per cent of available sugar;
cane 4 days old from 10 to 27, and
cane 6 days old from 15 to 30. Much
depends on the variety of cane, D

Yellow Calidonia the best.
Of course everybody knows that it
doesn't, do cane any good to lie

It is claimed that the Hawaiian
crop could be increased by 30,000
tons by careful attention to this sim

of cutting so that the exact age of all

It is an astonihing thing that only
after all these years is exact informa
tion forthcoming on such ' a simple
and obvious matter.
HOW TO AVOID THE FLU
A medical man of experience, writ
ing in the "Independent," gives this
advice in regard to escaping the flu:
Keep away from crowds. Some one
is pretty sure to be harboring the in
fluenza bacillus either in the early
stages or In the convalescence. The
disease is caught from other persons
and not from the air. It is important
to have plenty of fresh air. Sleep in it
live in It as much as you can. Avoid
wet feet and other disturbing physical
conditions. Eat plain food and get
plenty of sleep. Ina word, keep your
self fit as far as possible. Eschew the
the folly that whiskey is any good and
let it alone.
ECONOMIZE ON PAPER
The extraordinary and almost pro
hibitive use of paper, resulting in ab
normal scarcity and high prices, is at
