Decline of the German Press Naturally enough German news papers in the United States have declined mightily in number and influence since America went into the war. In 11117 there were 300 German newspapers and period icals published in the United States; now there only 327 and these have shrunken sadly iu cir culation and influence. Th is decadence began in the loss of advertising. Loyal American firms withdrew their patronage from th: German papers that were or might be, for all they knew, using the revenue thus derived, in fighting the American people. The outcome was that many pep ers had to go out of business be cause of this loss of patronage. At. the other end they were seri ously hit by the loss of subscrib ers. There were a great many people in America of German blood, or of German descent, who subscribed regularly to German papers, but who never read them In many cases the subscriptions ran on automatically because the papers were harmless, or they never ''got round" to stopping them. The war brought these peo ple up with a start. Men who had never taken the trouble to stop their subscriptions began to say, "I don't want that paper coining into the house!" KAUAI'S EMPORIUM IS!
