THE GARDEN IBLAND.TUEBDAY, MAY 18, 1920
A
THE H1L0 RAILWAY
LOOKS TO FUTURE
The llilo IJailway is contem
plating on important extension of
the north llilo line to carry it to
llonokaa, in order to meet the
needs and secure the Ira flic of the
north end of llamakua district.
The surveys have been completed
and the estimate are being made
up to this end.
This extension will leave the
present line at Kukaiau, a couple
of miles or so short of the present
l'aauilo terminus, and will main
tain a steady up grade of 1.7 per
cent to the new llonokaa termi
nus; Jhis is with a view to an
ultimate extension across the Is
land to Waimea and Kawaihae,
or Mahukona. This recalls the
original Wilder scheme of one gen
eral system which would include
the Hilo-IIatnakua and the Koha
la lines, with a harbor at Keawe-
nui, half way between Mahukona
and Kawaihae.
This new extension for the pres
ent wilUnvolve some S) miles of
main line, with a spur of a mile
or so down to the llonokaa mill.
It "will be a great convenience
to that section of the Island,
which heretofore has been 33 or
40 miles away from a safe and
satisfactory port.
Insurance Ayainst Dry Weather.
The unprecedented shortage of
water for lluming and mill pur
poses during the last two or three
years, has been so disastrous that
the Laupahoehoe Sugar Co. will
put in a high lift pumping plant,
at sea level, in the bottom of the
Kaawalii valley at the northern
boundary, to pump sea water, if
need be, to the main flume above.
The plan is to put in a two mill-gallon-capacity
plant .to lift the
water through a IHtOO ft. pipe line
to the 7"0 ft. level. This will
take the water from a sump or
well near sea level where they
hope to develop more or less fresh
water, but in case this is wanting,
they will have the whole Pacific
to draw on for an unfailing Mip-
piy-
The immersion of the cane in
sea water, during the short pe
riod of transit, in the liume will
not hurt it, and in any case it
can be washed otf at the mill with
fresh water.
The plant will cost from ?1 :!.",
000 to sir.o.ooo.
Its value will be mainly that of
insurance, in any ordinary year
it will not be used at all, but it.
will be always there for use when
ever required, so that the crops
can be taken off regularly and in
time, l'apaaloa is now working
on the ciap which they ought to
have taken oil' about this time
last year.
Theij Think it's Dry in Jlilo
llilo complains volubly and po
sitively of the dry weather. '"They
haven't had a good rain for
montns," "the water supply is
running low;'' "things are drying
up;" "the climate is changing;"
etc.
To the visitor, who doesn't know
llilo in her aqueous moods, it
seems as though a pretty liberal
discount should be made on these
pessimistic statements. However
v
the large blackened and burned
olf areas behind the town, and the
volumes of smoke ascending from
other burning areas to the south
would seem to bear out the
statements of the. llilo people. To
the usual Hilo, with a dowu-pwur
every night , which would keep the
whole country dripping such tires
would be out of the question.
liudly llnriufl at the t)iral'ltii
Considering how many people
there are who visit the Volcant
and other points of volcanic ac
Hon, and how reckless and ven
t tiresome many ol them are, it is
surprising how few accidents or
mishaps there are.
One occurred however the other
day which might easily have been
horribly fatal. Out Gilbert Pat-'
ten was Hit? victim, at tlie Kau
flow, where liquid lava has been
flowing- steadily from the 1808
crack, in the Kau desert, a place
of much interest and muck visited
these days. lie was in the act of
taking a picture of the flowing
stream when the thin crust on
which he was standing broke
through letting him down three
or four feet. Fortunately the lire
beneath was shallow, and some
what cooled, and fortunately also
he wore heavy shoes and leggings
which protected his feet . In the
process of scrambing out, however,
his hands were badly burned, lie
hadNo walk a couple of miles to
the road, whence he was conveyed
to the hospital in llilo. Accord
jug to latest advices he is doing
well.
j School Notes!
The school commissioners are
now in session in Honolulu. This
is one of the regular semi annual
sessions; it was at one time post
poned to a later date pending the
irrival of theschool survey report.
but when it became evident that
it would not be received until the
late summer, it was decided not
to wait for it.
There are several important
matters pending that demand im
mediate attention; the more so
is the supervising principals have
been in session, and have raised
a number of important qiiestions
which call for a prompt solution.
The supervising principals by
Hue of their close association
with the every day life of the
schools and their needs, are in a
better posit ion than anyone else,
to plan and prescribe for them.
This they have done with much
care. Their recommendations
however go to the school commis
sioners for review and confirma
tion.
Teachers will be glad to know-
that the days of the golden treas
ury school readers are numbered
and lhat they will be supplanted
this coming school year by some
more suitable series, just what,
has not been determined.
fr 4
In view of the great hardship
which the lit) per cent raise in the
fares to the coast will work to
the teachers, the Matson Co. now
proposes to exempt them from the
raise. This will be a most wel
come concession which they will
ippreciate very much.
It is proposed to extend the
daily school period in the schools
by adding thereto one hour. The
sessions will begin half an hour
earlier ' and close half an hour
later. This' is mainly to meet the
requirements of vocational in
struction.
There are still intelligent and
capable teachers who are willing
to come to Hawaii in spite of the
discomforts, inconveniences, and
drawbacks, and in spite of the
high costof transportation. We
hear of one band of young ladies
in Chicago who are ''just dying to
come!"
Mrs. A. 11, (Jlaisyer, district
nurse, who has been most assidu
ous and faithful along child wel
fare lines in connection with the
schools, will spend some three
mouths on the Mainland. Her
cllicient and intelligent work will
be missed.
:0:
Mr. C. A. Brown and his daughter
Rose came over from Town by the Ki
nau last Friday and proceeded im
mediately to their Hanalei home where
they will spend a few days. They
have an attractive plate at Hanalei
and another at Haena on the shores of
tha Makuu br.y, both of which they
arc improving and beautifying in very
effective and intelligent ways.
