KAUAI GARAGE CO.
At the last meeting or the Chamber
of Commerce (ho Secretary was au
thorized to write two emphatic letters,
the one in regard to the abundance
if booze on Uie Island, and the other
in regard to the Sunday movies.
These letters are published herewith:
APPEAL FOR REMEDY FOR
A letter addressed to U. S. District
Attorney S C. Hubcr and Internal
Revenue Collector Col. Hathaway
At the last meeting of the Kauai
Chamber of Commerce there w s em
phatic and forcible complaint against
the shocking and disgraceful prova
'once of illegitimate liquor , '.iraugh
:it the Island of Kauai. In the opin
ion of responsible nieniners. ; promi
uent position, and spec;; 1 facilities for
knowing, the conditions in.- worse
now under Prohibition than 1 n y were
under the license system.
Illegitimate l.quor is In i.e !. .l any
where and every where. stud '.nil the
Jtmost facility, -and tnosi openly.
Drinking and dninseini. ss ,ii yublic
and private gatherings, aim on the
street as well as in prl.v.le home;,
are deplorably common. .Moons'iine
llooze is in many instances made in
the homos, it is sua'., by the wife and
mother to be dealt out to ii,e Husband
and children, when liny cue home
from work; so that the children of
comparatively tender ears are In
coming confirmed topers.
One of the worst features o;' this
disgraceful condition of things, is that
it discredits and undermines the au
thority and value of law. There is an
insolent and reckless' deliance of law
on the part of those who trutlic in and
consume this illegitimate liquor,
which tends to discredit all law, so
that we are fostering and raising up
a generation of law contemners ;.nd
law breakers which will surely issure
in violence and anarchy.
There was u very unanimous con
census of conviction in the ssid meet
ing ihat the conditions were disgrace
ful, and that something ought to he
none to remedy them.
A resolution was liuahy passed, in
dti acting tho Secretary to write to the
L'. S. District Attorney ior Hawaii,
iUKl the Head of the Internal Uevenue
Ueparlmcnt for Hawaii, calling atten
tion to this deplorable condition of
things, and praying that incisures be
taken to remedy the same, and farther
praying that u competent and elncient
oiiicer of tho Internal iievuiue De
par.lnent be permanently located on
Kauai, to give his undivided attention
to these matters.
Trusting that you will give this
matter your early attention, I remain
J. M. LYDGAT 10.
Lihue, Kauai, June 21. l'J20.
K. C. A1IANA.
Treasurer of the Count of Kauai.
At the last meeting of the Kauai
Chamber of Commerce an emphatic
and indignant prote.it was voiced b
several responsible? members in re
gard to the character of the Sunday
evening moving picture shows ; iven
throughout the Island. These com
plaints met with the conlii mat ion of
the meeting, and the concensus of
opi"ion was that som. ihing mast h.
done to remedy the evil.
Attention was called to the f.ict that
the Sunday evening concession was
granted with tho e.pr ss understand
ing that the pictures should be of an
Educational, ISiblical. or Mural nature.
As a matter of fait, few if ;.ny of the
pictures- shown on Sundays comply at
all with these requirements, and many
of them, far from being moral are not
even decent. They arc, many of them,
sensational, suggestive, vicious and
degrading, not fit for any popular
audience tit any time, and assuredly
not fit for a Sunday evening exhibi
tion. Ye understand, that short of the
Supervisors, the authority rests with
you, and that any complaint, in the
lirsl instance, at any rate should be
directed to you.
Accordingly the K. tiai Chamber of
Commerce begs to register a formal
protest of the most urgent and em
phatic nature. against the character
of the pictures .shown in llie.M- Sun
day evening shows and begs that you
will use your authority and influence
to remedy the evil.
