KAUAI POLO TEAM
WINS FROM THE ARMY
(Continued from Page 1)
till he scored eight goals, the day's
record. The last came in the opening
of the eighth chukkar. a powerful
stroke which lifted the ball a quarter
of the way down the field. It was
only one example of the spectacular
strokes in which the game abounded.
Jay Could of the Kauai team crowd
ed Malina's record close with a total
of seven goals, three of which came in
the last part of the eighth chukkar.
Time after time Gould brought ap
plause -from the stands by the brilliant
manner in which he carried the ball
down the field, both teams trailing be
hind, or extracting it from a difficult
position with a single powerful swat.
Jim Spalding and Charles Rice of
Kauai smote the ball between the
posts for totals of five and two goals
respectively, while Lieutenant Lip-
man's pony contributed another goal
to Kauai by knocking the ball through
in the course of some hard play at the
end of the field.
Lone Tally
The single score made by the Army
team was sent through by Lieutenant
Truscott, who scored it in the fifth
chukkar. Several dashing attempts
by Truscott and other members of the
Army team failed by the slightest of
chances.
The first goal for Kauai was scored
by Spalding, and Rice followed a
moment later with the second. The
second period saw the start of Malina's
string of goals, the first coming then
and the second in the next period.
Gould made his first score in the sec
ond chukkar also.
From this time on Kauai continued
to pile up embarrassment for the score-
keeper at the end of the field. Before
this gentleman could change Kauai's
5 to 6 on the big score board, the
seventh goal had been made, and this
state of affairs continued throughout
the game.
The score by chukkars was:
I Kauai 2, Army 0; II Kauai 3.
Army 0; III Kauai 3, Army 0; IV
Kauai 3, Army 0; V Kauai 2, Army 1;
VI Kauai 3, Army 0; VII Kauai, 2.
Army 0; VIII Kauai 5. Array 0.
The Lineups
All-Army Lieutenants Thompson,
Truscott, Gibb and Lipman, with Lieu
tenants Stutzman and Caldwell as sub
stitutes. Kauai James Spalding. J. Malina.
Charles Rice and Jay Gould.
George Angus was referee, and Cap
tain Wilder of the 17th Cavalry and
T. V. King were timekeepers.
Maui's polo quartet will face Kauai
to decide the 1020 interlisland champ
ionship September 6. A slashiaK game
;.t Kajiiolani par'.: U.st Saturiiv im
which Oahu took a 17 5 defeat gave
Maui the prtivilege of battling for the
title.
