Feasible Road to Same In reply Mr. Lydgate explained that there was already a fairly good auto mobile road up the old Llndemann, or Eggerklug place, and down into the Opackaa valley to a point immediate ly under this park. A zig-zag trail led up the side of the valley to the Park down the valley until it struck the stretch overlooking it, but that a good road could be made by doubling back top of the descending ridge. Then it wag a matter of Just following up the ridge, an open grassy slope. About 1200 or 1500 ft of side hill excavation and a small bridge across the stream would be all that wag necessary. It would cost all told perhaps a couple of thousand dollars. Mr. Moragne confirmed this, and farther stated that there was a provi sion for the relocation of a proper road through the Eggerking tract, and that would be done just as soon as the Makee Sugar Co. cleared the land there. Plea for Olohena Homestead Road Mr. Cheatham explained that the last legislature made an appropriation of $15,000 for a macadam road for the Olohena Homesteads a distance of some three miles. Owing to the great advance of the price of labor and material the $15,000 will not complete the Job and the terms of the appro priation prevent it from being spent on the road as far as it will go. It is however feasible to use it in that way if the county will build the road for that figure; In other words if. the County will make up the deficit. Will Ask County to Help This road will be a great benefit and asset to the county. It will cost them perhaps $4000 more than they will get from Honolulu, that is, they will get a $19,000 road for $4000. That road is going to be absolutely vital to that homestead population and their interests there. Without a prop er road, they will be marooned there, unable.' to move. He then made a motion to the effect that the supervi sors be requested to take up the con struction of this road and make up whatever deficit there might be in carrying the work to a successful issue. Carried. Bridge at Upper Wallua Falls Inquiry was made concerning a bridge that was to be put in across the Wailua at the Upper Falls, and which would give direct communica tion to all that homestead country from Lihue, when would that bridge be put in? Mr. Brandt, on behalf of the super visors, replied that such was the in tention, and the bridge material was already there on the ground. It had been the intention to get it in this year. But there were such heavy ex penditures to be met elsewhere, es pecially the Nawiliwill and Anahqla bridges, that it would have to go over till next year. It would -cost about $cooo. Must Protect Our Roads Against Heavy Traffic Mr. Lydgate brought up the matter of road protection, calling attention to the stand that was being taken by the city engineer of Honolulu, in re gard to heavy loads and high speeds, and their disastrous effect on even a solid concrete road. He was urging that restrictions be placed on this ruinous traffic. The speaker suggest ed that our own roads were showing many signs of wear, and with a stead ily increasing heavy traffic, it might be well for us to take gome similar action. He would like to hear what the supervisors and the road men thought of it. Our Road Equal to Our Needs Mr. Moragne, being called for, re plied in substance, that of course abnormal weights and abnormal speeds were ruinous to a road. We had set out 8 or 10 years ago to build roads that would meet our require ments at the time, and come within our means at the time. We had done so, and done so successfully. Consld ering the kind of traffic for which our roads were built, and the money that they had cost, our roads have stood up (Continued on page 6) I CALIFORNIA FEED CO.
