8CHOOL NOTES
Lihue Grammar 8chool.
It has been announced that the Li-
hue school team et both boys and
girls are going to play against the
Kilauea school boys and the Hanalei
school girls on this following Satur
day at the Kapaa ground.
The basket ball court is already
lined out for the boys and girls to
practice. Mr. Warner and Miss Qreen
arc in charge of it.
The children are preparing for the
school Christmas tree on December
17th, which is the closing day of our
school for a two weeks' vacation.
The children are having review
lessons as exams are near.
The girls are busy working in the
domestic science room. They are
going to have an exhibition at the
end of this term.
The children of the Lihue school
and Kauai High school are practicing
songs and verses for a Christmas Can
tata taught by Miss Roe.
The foundation for the new shop is
nearly finished. We made the
foundation of cement.
At the Lihue Ball Park there are
moving pictures and all sorts of
games. There is a cyclone over
there. MoBt of the people go to look
at the cyclone rider.
Waimea School.
During the week the school wpj
fortunate in hearing two excellent
speakers. Mr. Murpht, now in the
employ of the American Bible Society,
talked to the school in English, Japan
ese, and Chinese. He showed the
derivation of many Chinese and Jap
anese words, giving the historyof the
development of the script for the
words. Mr.. Murphy has lived many
years in th Orient. We hope to hear
Mr. Murphy again if he makes another
visit to Kauai.
Mr. Carver addressed the school on
a Thanksgiving subject. He tola or
his visits to the home of the early
Pilgrims at Plymouth, Of Plymouth
Rock, of the original "House of Seven
Gables", and of Roger Williams'
church at Salem. The hour was ex
tremely interesting. We are fortun
ate in having a man of such wide
experience and one full of cheerful
helpfulness in our midst.
On Tuesday Mr. Leebrlck of the U.
of Hawaii addressed the Mana-Eleele
Teachers' Association in their regular
meeting at Waimea. After the talk
by Mr. Leebrlck the regular business
meeting was held. .We are indebted
to Mr. Warner for having Mr. Leebrlck
with us.
The holidays will find the following
shop work completed under direction
of Mr. Ferrlera. This list of artlsles
has been made, in addition to conduct
ing the regular garden classes, coach
ing the champion ball earn of the
district, acting as buslnesa and prop
erty manager of the school concert,
doing much repairing, painting, pol
icing and other work. The following
list has been built and turned over to
the school at no cost to the county
other than the cost of material: one
chest of drawers, one vlctrola stand,
five kindergarten benches, 1700 assort
ed blocks, and a 'large supply cabinet
for the kindergarten, and a large sand
table. For the school and cottages,
four large sand tables, seven two
drawer and mirror dressing tables,
one set house steps, five road signs,
and many smaller articles. After the
holidays the shop will take local orders
for articles. A very small charge
will be made to cover cost of extras
and supervision.
Kapaa School
The Hanamaulu boys won from Ka
paa in a game of playground basoball
on Saturday by the score of IS to 13.
Although beaten, the local boys made
it a bard fight, and all exprtss them
selves as believing that they will put
it all over Hanamaulu school if they
get another chance.
The concert to be given by the
schoo pupils will bt held at Kapaa
hall on Friday the 17th, at 7:30 p.m.
A dance will follow the concert. The
proceeds will go towards a Christmas
tree fund of the school. Tickets for
the affair are being rapidly disposed
of by the ttachers.
A Christmas tree for the pupils will
be Riven at the school at 10 a. m. on
Thursday, December 16th.
Closing exercises for the Christmas
term will be held on Dectmber 16th at
the school, and the rifenda of the
children and others are cordially In
vlted to attend.
A matinee will be held at the school
hall on Friday, Dtcember 17th, at
p, m. Admission wllbe twenty five
cents.
