The New University In
Hawaii
The University of Hawaii con
sists yins far of two main depart
ments or Colleges, one of applied
Science, and one of Arts and
Sciences, granting the usual 13. A.
degree, it Las a faculty of over
thirty, and occupies a tract of 'JO
acres in Manoa. Jn addition to
the plant there, t has a biological
.Laboratory at Waikiki, in con
nection with the Aquarium. A
line new Laboratory Building is
in process of construction on the
Manoa Campus, which will house
the work in physics, chemistry
and Sugar Technology.
The University will meet the
needs of the Territory in two
main lines. it will give the or;
dinary College training that here
tofore' could not be secured in
Hawaii, but had to be sought a
broad. There will still be a
great many who will go abroad
lor this training, largely perhaps
because it is abroad; and perhaps
wisely. But for those wuo can
not uo this it will be a great ad
vantage to be able to secure a
liberal education here at home.
But perhaps the most signal
service that it will render the Is
lands, is along the line of Sugar
Technology and applied Science.
As is well known Hawaii leads
the world iu siigar culture and
sugar engineering. The best
conducted Sugar enterprises in
the world are within a stone's
throw of the College, ami the var
ious investigations and experi
ments being conducted by the
Planters Association are open to
it. , This naturally gives the col
lege a great advantage over other
similar institutions, so that it
ought to stand in the very first
ranks of such schools, and be ex
celled by none. It is surely a
matter of congratulation that we
have such a technical school in
our midst, and its services will
mi rely redound to the success of
our main industry, and of the
Territory at large.
Au important new departure of
more than ordinary significance
is the course iu Commerce now
being instituted. Because of its
position midway between th
Occident and the Orient, and at
the center of the Pacific, Hawaii
has superior commercial advanta
ges. In order, however, that we
may make the most of these ad
vantages we must know more
about the peoples with whom we
would deal, their languages,
their needs, their manner of life,
and their ways of looking at
things.
It is to be hoped that the Uni
versity of Hawaii will more and
more attract students from these
various countries, and that bonds
of fellowship may be formed
which will be helpful and valua
ble all around, ami in many ways.

Rear End Lubrication
Standard Oil manager for the Terri
tory, Mr. J. P. Jeffries, In talking on
this subject In Honolulu the other
day said:
"The importance of Transmission
and Uoar Axle Lubrication is often
overlooked by the automobile owner
and truck operator and considered a
minor detail. The lubrication of
these parts Is fully as important 'as
the lubrication of the motor.
The entire load of the car or truck
is taken by the two teeth in the Rear
Axle which are in mesh. These
teeth should be separated by a film of
oil, otherwise the motor will fail to
deliver the power at the rear wheels
that it should; the gears will wear
rapidly and become noisy.
"In the lubrication of the ball
bearings, it is necessary to maintain
a film of oil between the ball, ocne and
race; otherwise, these parts will not
receive correct lubrication. This
will result in excessive bearing wear,
throwing the gears out of alignment,
rendering them noioy, and will cause
a considerable loss of power at this
loint.
"Oil Is a more suitable lubricant
'or this purpose than hard grease, be
ause of its fluidity and ability to
)enetrato the minute clearances be
ween the ball and race, which is only
ne ten-thousandth of an Inch. An
sther reason why hard grease is not
to suitable as oil is that the revolving
;cars will cut a path through the
srease and allow the gears to run dry.
"If a tooth is broken or chipped and
grease is used, the particles of metal
do not drop to the bottom of the case,
but are held In suspension and are
apt to get between the other
teeth which will result In further
breakage and probably in entirely
ruining the Rear Axle or Transmis
sion.
"It is just as necessary to drain
and wash out the Rear Axle and Tran
smission cases (and this should be
done every 2000 miles) as It Is to
drain and wash out the motor crank
case. When hard grease is used,
this is a difficult matter, and it prob
ably will be necessary to take the
Transmission and Rear Axle apart to
clean them out.
"When usirg hard grease It is nee
essary to fill the housing nearly full
to insure any lubrication at all. When
this is done, the revolving gears push
or force the grease out along the
shafts and at the rear wheels, causing
serious inconvenience and danger In
rendering the brakes inoperative."

What has become of that new
Auto Traffic Ordinance that was
reported to be in process of prep
aration some time ago?
We met recently on the public
highway a snwll truck transport
ing a Ford body crossways of the
car so that it projected far over
on each side, thus monopolizing
the road and endangering traffic.
We are. told that this does not
contravene the traffic ardinance.
Well, it ought to.

SCHOOL BUDGET CUT
As amended by the Hawaii County
supervisors, the Big Island school
budget, according to word received
here from Hilo, has been cut to
$514,760, instead of $781,000, the sum
called for in estimates adopted by
the recent special session of the legis
lature. The total allowed for 1920
was $511,560. Reductions were ef
fected for 1921 by pruning the building
program, increased salaries being
accepted as Inevitable. Star Bulletin
