wueue praise is due
Then? has been a very marked iuiprovetneut
in the quality of the pictures shown of late ou
our moving picture screens. As a rule there
uie no longer auy serious infringements of
uv.-t.ei.ty ami lutirality. As a rule, the moral
puioe is good, and the teaehiug, so far as
14.C4-1 is auy, salutary, though uot always very
.uciiig. The pictures are generally enter
and interesting aud sometimes in
uu. tive. All this is very commendable.
l t.i iUermore, tinder the new Plantation Wei
iare bureau management, we have the promise
oi l '.'tier things still, in the elimination of
suiiic minor evils, and the addition of more edu
tiuuiil aud instructive material. We appre
ciate these concessions to public taste and
puou;.- moral sense, aud are very grateful for
them.

UXL FUXDAMEXTAL FAULT REMAINS
The moving picture service, however ''falls
down" fundamentally and all along the line,
as we know it, by being untrue to life.
It is uot that it is vicious, or immoral, in the
ordinary sense, but that it is ulircal.
What kind of an idea will the average Fili
pino get from the movies of the life and civil
ization of America? What inferences will he
draw frmu the movies as to the widespread
prevalence of lawlessness and crime there?
To get out with a brace of revolvers, and
shoot up the town before breakfast, simply as
a matter of innocent recreation, this would
seem to be the most common popular amuse
ment, the one thing that gives zest and interest
to life in America.
But the worst of it is that there seems to
be no hue in the Utopian laud of the movies. ,
Aftei his run of violence, this bragadocio hero
goes home to breakfast with as little compunct
ion. ; ml as little danger as though he had been
-shoeing snipe. Xo officer of the law waits
ou h'in with a warrant of arrest. No hand
cuffs appear ou the scene, and no vision of a
jail seutente disturbs him. lie is a hero, not
a criminal. The inference is that shooting
men in America is as harmless a sport as shoot
ing mynah birds in llawaii.
When, in the exigencies of the story, it be
comes necessary to shoot a man, why don't they
stick to the realities, see the thing through, and
show what becomes of the murderer. That
would be a mighty good gospel to proclaim
right here where some classes of our popula
tion are "fed" up"' ou the movie values of -human
life.
This is where the movies "fall down;" they
are glaringly unreal, and false to the actual
facts of life.
Now this is particularly unfortunate for us,
because we have a good many people in our
midst who don't realize how false and absurd,
this .ill is, and who are disposed to accept it
ts g'-spel truth, more or less "to their own un
doing, and to the detriment of public peace
ULd veil being.
Le- us have one more reform ; then the mov
ies w 11 be all right.
XAMEs FOR OURSTREETS
Su.ely the time has come when Lihue should
have jauii's for her streets. Kapaa and Ana
ho'.a. and the new Wailua Homesteads have au
ekibo.-ate street system, even though in some
case they haven't got the actual stree.s .Lihue
Las 1 ad the treets for half a century or so,
and they are nameless.
It is cumbersome and inconvenient to direct
an inquirer to the Grove Farm side, makaitif
the school' or to "the road that runs along by
the smre over towards Hanamanlu." Uow
much simpler it would be to say Main Street,
or Cl-urch Street, or Merchant Street. Or. if
these names are too hackneyed or too prosaic,
let u : have simple Hawaiian names. Kukui,
Kua. ila; i a. after our trees, or Kanoa, Kawelo,
Mene uht. after historic or mythical character-.
Whatever the names selected, it is time we
had tiiem. We would recommend this matter
to the attention of the Chamber of Commerce
and t.ie lizard of Supervisors.
is IHSAKUAMEXT POSSIBLE t
As we begin i lie new year we would be glad
to eliminate some of the perplexing problems
that have heretofore baffled all attempts to
harm .nize with the spirit of progress and in
terna 'ioiial interest.
Tlu great world war was fought for a prin
ciple that seems to have vanished under the
cloud of human depravity.
A little more than two years ago the world
was optoiuistie. It looked forward to a sjeedy
settlement of international questions and'dis
puts and the formation of an international
alliance that would forever banish war and
every form of militarism; but today there are
wars and tumors of wars, propaganda for dis
armament, urgent arguments for more effective
armament, organizations for permanent peace,
alliances tor mutual protection, aud various
other features of world movements which show
little else than that the world has been spilled
upside down and international chaos prevails.
Everywhere there is a spirit of mistrustfulness.
Nations cannot agree, and instead of peace on
earth we are preparing for war with greater
energy. The United States is increasing her
army and navy and thereby becoming an object
of suspicion. Other nations must do the
same, anyl thus, after au enormous sacrifice
of huiuay energy aud an expenditure of treas
ure that has bankrupted the world we find
ourselves back at the starting point with our
war spirit in the ascendency, armies and navies
ou the increase and nothing in sight that looks
like an early settlement of the great internat
ional problems that have for their base the
greed of human kind.
There is unrest in the industrial world, agi
tators are frantically urging for unions and
the rights of labor, employers seeking to cut
down the scales of wages, agriculturalists
clamoring for living prices of raw materials,
consumers sceptical iu regard to values, and
everywhere a spirit of unrest and suspicion.
We read in almost any paper the number of
starving children that might be fed with the
cost of the building of one battleship, and yet
the battleship is built.
, "So nation seems to want war. All are ex
hausted and all are suspicious. The world
has been an armed camp for so many centuries
that it is hard to get away from existing con
ditions. It. is hard to bring the world to
gether upon a common basis to formulate plans
for a common interest. Some nations are
bloodthirsty, all are jealous. Some are fierce
and others meek. It is the very meekness of
the law-abiding Armenians that has made them
an object of persecution by the bloody Turks.
Lack of honor and lack of forbearance are
other great obstacles to au agreement to dis
arm. There is still among nations a burning
desire to redress real or fancied wrongs by
military force.
Advocates of peace urge that the teachings
of the Christian religion for nineteen huudred
years are a failure if the teachings of Christ
cannot now be applied in the settlement of the
world's difficulties.
The United States has with one hand shown
the most practical demonstration of the teach
ings of Jesus iu its works of mercy; in feeding
the hungry of many lands; taking the bless
ings of medical science to plague-stricken
peoples ; relieving suffering from fire and fam
ine, war aud pestilence; while with the other
hand we are constructing a bigger navy and a
bigger military institution.
' When a nation must carry Christian mercy
in one hand and a sword of defense in the
other, how will it be possible for the nations
to disarm?.
Disarmament cannot be successfully carried
out with any degree of safety by any one
nation. There must be a mutual agreement,
and that mutual agreement cannot lie made
or executed until there is a desire for peace
and the establishment of confidence among
nations. If the Christian religiou is good for
men it is good for nations, and in it will be
found the elements of an international peace
and total disarmament.
When shall we begin the millenium?
CAN TUE HARD LUCK STORY
Talk about hard times and you will think
hard times. Talk about good times and you
will improve conditions. Help to make lietter
times and better times will come. You may
not be able to get what you want, but do some
thing until what you want can be had. We
have much respect for the man who, failing to
get his usual or desired employment, will take
what he can get. until times improve and he is
able to mak a choice. Quit your knocking
and go to work. Drones never accomplish
anything. If things are not going your way
go the way things are moving and keep on
going until you catch up with the procession,
then climb upon the band-wagon and join in
the music. If you can be heard above the
others you will attract somebody's attention,
and that means one of two things, success or
jail.
There is at least one time when a man
agrees with his wife, and that's when she tells
him he's the best fellow on earth.
A man usually starts out paying a girl a
little attention and the next thing he knows
he is paying her bills.
