Kauai Teachers Meet to
Write Coarse of Study
A special meeting of the Kauai
Teachers' Association was held on
Saturday morning at the Lihue Social
Hall. As the Kauai teat-lidrs are to
write three subjects of the Course ot
Study for the schools of the Territory,
the purpose of the meeting was to
get the teachers together to elect a
committee to work on the suggestions
from the teachers. The subjects
assigned to the Kauai teachers by the
Department are History, Civics, and
Story Work. A very interesting dis
cussion followed as to who should be
on the committee and the number ot
teachers for each subject. Then
came the question of appointing the
committee and after a long drawn
out discussion, a motion was made,
seconded and carried that Miss Hund
ley appoint a committee of three
on History, three for Civics and three
for Story Work. This committee will
receive and "boil down" suggestions
and "kicks" about the Course of Study
tor the three subjects assigned to
this island. As the Hanaruaulu and
Eleele schools were ready to hand
their suggestions to the committee, It
was voted that Miss Hundley take
charge of the papers until the com
mittee is appointed which will be
sometime this week.
The schools of Kauai are to enter
a contest in singng and tho Star Bul
letin has offered a prize for the best
school chorus. There will be Judges
in each Association District. Then
the three winning schools will sing at
a final contest in June in Lihue. The
rules require each school to sing three
songs, one of which will be sung by
each and will be a patriotic song. The
songs will be in English and the num
ber in the chorus must not be more
than thirty five pupils. Miss Wilcox
will finance the contest as the usual
problem of getting the chorus pupils
to Lihue will come up later. At the
Principals' Club meeting at Koloa last
month, a motion was made, seconded
and carried that Mrs. Ahana, Mrs.
Grote and Mrs. Sheldon be a com
mittee to make rules for the contest.
Mrs. Ahana made the report to the
Association.
Mrs. Mesick resigned as president
of the Kauai Teachers Association and
Mr. Grinnell took the chair. The
Association stood to express a vote of
thanks to Mrs. Mesick for her faithful
term of office. All regret to see
Mrs. Mesick leave and Mr. Simpson
spoke of her excellent work in school
and of her long1 service with the Department.
