Tomlila, a local Japaneso who was
charged with being an insane . person
and who was being escorted to the
Honolulu Insane Asylum by Officer
Isaac Kaiu of Kapaa, mysteriously (lis
appeared while on tho Klnau last
Tuesday night, and it Is bolloved that
ho committed suicide by jumping
overboard sometime during the night
between tho hours of ten and four
o'clock.
According to Officer Kaiu, his pris
oner boarded the steamer In the usual
manner and was assigned a roOm In
tho lower dock with his keeper in the
room directly opposite. He seemed
to be in good spirits and chatted with
the officer until ten o'clock when they
both retired to their rooms. About
four o'clock, just before entering Hon
olulu harbor, tho officer prepared to
arouse his prisoner from his slumbers
but found tho room empty. A search
was made of the upper deck and tho
steerage quarters, but no trace of tho
man was found. Tho ship's officers
wore notified and another search and
inquiries mad'o, but withut avail
Tho only things left behind by tho
prisoner were his pair of shoes, coat,
hat and a bundle of old clothing.
Joseph Scharsch Sr. has leased for
fifteen years a portion of his property
adjoining the Kapaa Oarage to a
Chinese from Hanalel, who has al
ready started the erection of an up-to-
date bakery and restaurant on tho site
A now two story building Is nearing
completion on the Akima property
directly opposite tho railroad' crossing.
The upper story will be used as liv
ing quarters and the ground floor for
a tailor shop by Koreans who leased
tho property.
