To the Members of the Lihue Li
brary Board:
The following is a report of the
work accomplished by the Lihue LI
brary since the opening in November
1&20, to date:
Membership
Adults 43
Juveniles 6
Calls 184
Circulation 309
Attendance
Story hour 339
New books
Juvenile (purchased ) SO
Adult (gifts) 118
Borrowed (Lib. Hawaii) 60
No story hour was held December
23 as the children's Christmas tree
was held in the library room at that
date
No deliveries were made on Decem
ber 25 and January 1, and only partial
deliveries were made January 6 and
21, owing to rain and car trouble,
-nd due to the rain no delivery at all
was made January 15th.
Aside from the story hour ver
little work is being done among th
juveniles. The children seem loath,
to pay the required fifty cents. They
stay long aftor the story hour am
look at th books wistfully, but de
part when membership is mentioned.
The few boys who are members are
most enthusiastic and rwill brows
among the books for an hour or so
tnd finally choose very good reading.
With the new juvenile books at hand
some active means should be taken
to put them into the hands of the
children who are so in need of them.
Respectfully submitted,
J. Purdy, Librarian,
March 14, 1521.

BASKET BALL
This paragraph will explain to the
-oice loviiig citizens of Lihue the
ri;in of the fearful din that resound
fed from the windows and doors of
the Armory last Monday night. It
was a basket ball duel between the
"Frenchies" and the "Wops", fought
to a finish after a five-minute exten
sion of time when victory was de
clared for the "Wops" by a margin
of 45-41.
The particular defenders of Italia
were Fernandez, commanding Long
streth, Bailey, Akong and Samuelson,
while the onslaughts of France were
led by Lane, with the lusty Christian,
Dow, Fern and Shinkichi In his wake.
Special citation was given Samuelson
who showed great form, and Fern
whose puissance promised much.
Lane, Dow, Fernandez and Longstreth
of the old Benedictine Guard, but now
pitted against each other, were ter
rific. Christian with his crafty
smile outwitted his foes at every
turn. Bailey's shooting was out
rigorous and the sons of Nippon were
loyal to the last ditch. Firing will
be resumed next Wednesday night.
Let the public be warned!
Speaking of basket ball, word comes
from the Kauai Y delegation in Hono
lulu that the honor of Kauai has been
upheld when our lads defeated the
Hilo High's in a match game at Cen
tral V. They also report that their
Honolulu hosts are giving them splen
did entertainment.
Rev. T. Okamota, pastor of the
Lihue Japanese church, has resigned
his charge taking effect as of March
31st. He will remain in his position
however for a short time until his sue-
cssor arrives.
Mr, Okamoto has been on the Is
ands about 20 years. He came first
ss a domestic servant and from that
Decame assistant pastor of the Makiki
Japanese Church. After some ten
ears he went back to Japan and took
a course in Theology in Osaka, and
returning to Hawaii was assigned by
tnc Hawaiian Board to the pastorate
of the Lihue Church, which he has
held for ten years.
He is a man of a very fine Christ
ian spirit, ewbodying to an exceptional
degree the kindlier graces of his high
profession. Patient, gentle, sympa
thetic, faithful and hardworking he
has given himself most self sacrific
ingly to the service of the Kingdom
and his people, and be will hold a
very tender place in their regard.
Hi3 plans are not entirely settled
yet but he hopes to remain in Lihue
in some humble capacity. He is de
pendent on his own exertions for a
living for himself and his family.
