'THE GARDEN ISLAND, TUESDAY, APRIL 19, 1021 8CHOOL NOTES Waimea School The new term opened with an en rollment , of five hundred. The up per grades of Waimea School are sur prisingly large considering the aver age of other schools of the same class on the Island. The eighth grade has twenty-seven, and has not lost a single ' one this rear. The aevonth grade has thirty-seven, the sixth grade forty, and the fifth grade sixty-eight. Very few have been dropped from the rolls of the four up per grades. ; Mrs. Clapper gave grade SB com plimentary trip to Kukulolono Park during the vacation. The day was a pleasant one, beside being Instruct ive. . During Dr. Brown's visit to Kauai Waimea School was favored with a profitable hour's talk. Dr. Brown left his Impress on us all. .-. This far Waimea has won all volley ball games, boys . and girls. We match Kalaheo on Friday for the championship of district No. 1. Ev eryone is optimistic over tne prob able outcome of the games. The Star Bulletin's Oardon Contest Is causing quite a kick. From twenty to a hundred letters a week are sent to the Bulletin. Each gardner has something he thinks ought to be pub lished. A week or so ago the school picture appeared, and got quite a rise out of the gardeners. Mr. Brandt has made an. additional $5.00 cash offer to the best Individual gardener and the boys come on Sat urdays and Sundays and e"ven during vacation to win It.' The best banana grower among the boys is to get a watch, hunting-knife or compass, and the toest girl banana artist , a box of candy. All along the line the re sponse of the prizes has been Imme diate and lasting. L. Crawford stated In Hllo recently that business men of Honolulu have been attending a regular lecture "course on business and Industry and related topics, con ducted by Dr. Komanzo Adams of the University of Hawaii,. Hilo men de manded to know why they couldn't have such a course. They were told that all they needed to do to get It, was to ask for it. They did ask for it loudly and they will have their lec ture course next week. The extension work committees at the University' of Hawaii have work ed out with Hilo people complete plans for this lecture course and an nounce two series of daily lectures on two lines of subjects, one on econom ics of business and the other on soc ial welfare.- The topics are as fol lows: 1. The Return to Normal Business Conditions. , I. Taxation Paying for the War. R. Is America Industrially Efficient? 4. Labor Unrest What' the Worker Wants. The other series Is on these topics: 1. What Is an American Standard of Living and What Does It Cost to Maintain It? 2. Constructive versus Ameliorative Social Effort. 3. Is the Human Race Deteriorating T 4. How do We Hinder Americaniza tion of Aliens? The Hllo Rotary Club and the Ha wall Island Welfare Bureau are act lvely backing this lecture course and have undertaken the responsibility of organizing the classes of persons who will attend the lectures.
