AN EXACTING CRITIC.
She Knew the Kind of a Picture She
Wanted.
"Appearanres are often deceptive,"
said Theophilus (Ireathead as he
settled himself comfortably in his chair
and lighted a fresh cigar. "I have
lived much as other men have, and
pride myself on being an exceedingly
keen observer. I must admit, how
ever, that there arc times when I make
most serious errors in judging persons
and things.
"I was in a large artroom the other
dav. when a youna woman of most
distinguished appearance entered. She
had come to the place in a handsome
equipage and a footman had accom-
anied her as far as the door of the
establishment.
"Her maid followed at a respectful
distance. There was such an air of
noblesse oblige, admixed even with
hauteur, about the young woman that
I at once felt that 1 was in the presence
of a person ot the most aristocratic pre
tensions. "Involuntarily I re-arranged my
necktie, adjusted my coat, and took a
survey of myself in a convenient mir
ror. "The majestic creature seemed
greatly interested in the works of art
about her, which she surveyed through
her lorgnette in the most critical man
ner. I here was a trown upon her
aristocratic teatures.
" 'Ah,' I said to myself, 'here is a
young woman who has so high an ideal
of the great in art that the splendid
paintings here stem to her to be but
mere tawdry.'
"The superb woman turned and,
stamping her loot petulantly, said to
the proprietor :
'1 hem s all very tine, but I wants
a obi mg picture !" N. Y. Tribune.
A NEW SNAKE
DISCOVERED
A Reptile With a Horn on the End
of
its Tail Which Feeds on Frog's.
A new snake has been discovered by
reedbird hunters down in the Neck,
and all the small boys and men are
searching night and day fof a specimen
in order that they can secure the $100
offered by Superintendent Hrown if
the Zoo for the capture of the first
reptile of the species. The snakes at
the Zoo are fed on frogs, and last week
Mr. Brown learned from the collectors
that a snake about five feet long, with
a horn on the end of its tail, had been
playing havoc with the frogs down in
the Neck and had made the frog mar
ket wery tight. The hunters say that
the snake has a way of gathering in
whole frog family at a gulp, and it
was in this way that the new snake was
discovered.
On Tuesday last James Martin, who
ives near the end ol Twelfth street,
was out in the swamp with his gun and
d.'g. He had good luck, and his
packets were filled with fat reedb'rds
nd a brace of plover. He started
home, but his attention was arrested by
a peculiar noise, and his dog "stood,"
as if there was game in sight. Nothing
appeared, but the dog seemed to be
transfixed. Martin investigated and
found about a dozen frogs on a small
hummi ck in the swamp, and a large
snake was grabbing them .right and
left. Martin says that the snake had a
very large mouth, was fully five feet
mg and that there was a horn on the
end of his tail which he used to kill the
frogs. After striking the frogs he would
prrceed to eat them. Martin was so
dumbfounded at the unusual spectacle
that he forgot he had his gun with him
and the snake wriggled off. Superin
tendent Hrown says he has a number
of curious reptiles at the Zoo, and
he will pay $100 to the person who
brings him a snake that comes any
where near being like the one de
scribed by Martin. Philadelphia
