' It seems to be still the general Re publican opinion that Kuhlo will get tho party nomination If ho goes after it. Hut that rises a lot of tough ques tions. For example It Is the usual " rulo for the executive, as head of the party, to help tho ticket, but Frear can certainly no longer be expected to takd the stump for Kuhlo. It Is also the rulo for Republican con ventions to endorse the head of tho party, but how, can tho next conven tion nominate Kuhlo and endorse Frear? As a political move in tho Interests of his own candidacy, Kuhlo's state ments are regarded with varying opinions. EDITOR STAR: As the matter of a public libary building for Honolulu has been brought prominently before our people of late it may bo interest ing to know what Is being done in this line in other and larger places. The public library building now ap proaching completion In New York city has been pronounced Jiy some as tho "most magnificent public building in the United States." The follow ing details are taken from an eastern paper. The building fills the entire frontage of two city blocks from For tieth to Forty-second street, facing, east. It is three hundred and ninety four feet long, two hundred and seventy-four feet deep, and one hundred nnd thirty feet above the ground to Its highest point. The stock room at the rear, overlooking Bryant Park, Is two hundred and ninety-seven feet long, seventy-eight feet wide and fifty three feet high. This Is occupied by a structure of steel beams covering almost the entire space and containing four and a halt million pounds of steel. Supervisor Aylett has been gar nlsheed for taxes alleged to be, due, amounting to $34.70. The queer part of the proceeding Is that the tax assessor came all the way town town to garnishee Aylett's mu nlllccnt salary of $50 per month as a statesman, when it would have been so much easier to garnishees him as night custodian of the capltol build ing. Whether Aylett owes the money is anothor question. Ten dollars Is claimed by the Territory for personal taxes, and the rest on property.
