C, JANUARY 31 BY A VOTE OF 259 TO 43 THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TODAY ADOPTED A JOINT RESOLU TION WHICH GIVES THE GOVERNMENT RECOGNITION TO SAN FRANCISCO'S CLAIMS TO THE GREAT FAIR TO BE HELD IN 1915 IN CELEBRATION OF THE OPENING OF THE PANAMA CANAL. THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EXPOSITION AT THE WESTERN. METROPOLIS. ON THE PRELIMINARY VOTE FOR THE IMMEDIATE CONSIDER. As soon as Honolulu was this morn ing made awaro by cable of the wel come fact that San Francisco had been awarded the great Panama canal open ing exposition in 1915, Oscar While, president of the Honolulu Merchants' Association, cabled the above to the San Francisco Merchants Association. "It is splendid news," said President White, "and the whole territory has reason to bo delighted at the informa tion. Mllverton, deputy city and county at torney, an amendment to the municipal act will bo asked by the supervisors giving them more power over the office of road supervisor. Mil verton was asked for an opinion as to the power of the board to reduce the salary of the road supervisor or cut It out altogether. Since tho Shrlners and Elks began the plans to have many visitors hero, the mat ter has been taken up several times, and the result has been this final no tice from tho hotels that there were no accommodations. "The Seaside has stated that it can take care of twenty-eight or thirty peo ple. But the other hotels have told us not to rely upon them for any rooms at all. JORDAN'S WHITE SALE BEGIN8 WEDNE8DAY McQoaid Is Free, Sane Again The final stage of the caso of Wil liam M. McQuald, who has been tried on a chargo of having assaulted Vol ney C. Driver with intent to commit murder, was reached this morning, when McQuaid was discharged from custody as being sane. The proceetoigs wero tield in Judge Cooper's chambers, and there wero present Dr. N. B. Emerson, surgeon of police department, Dr. C. B. Wood, and Attorneys Douthltt and Coke, who had conducted tho caso for the de fense. Drs. Emerson and Wood had been Auctioning Church To Build Apartment House On tho eighteenth or twenty-fifth of this month the old Methodist church of this city, on the corner of Berctania and Miller streets, will be sold at auction and it is expected that on tho site thereof will be erected an up-to-date apartment house of handsome design, to cost between $55,000 and $60,000, fully furnished, and to be put up by the Trent Trust Co. There is over half an acre In area on the site mentioned and the pro jected building will include sixteen apartments to rent at $50 each per month, Each apartment will have a parlor, two bedrooms, with dis NOTICE TO PROPERTY-INEBS, THE SUPERVISORS WAWT SIDEWALKS In accordance with an opinion given done until the legislature gives more by the city and county attorney's de partment, the supervisors are planning to ask the legislature for power to enforce the laying or sidewalks. Sup ervisor Low wanted an -ordinance to compel all property owners within three and a half miles of the Post office to curb the sidewalks of their property. John Welsh, tho juryman who was on tho McQuaid case, and was arrest ed for having been intoxicated, was be fore Judge Cooper this afternoon to make an explanation regarding his conduct, in answer to a contempt cita tion. Welsh stated that he told Captain Nielsen and a couple of others that ho was a Juryman. Judgo Lymer stated that he did not know that Welsh was a juryman. When Welsh was before him, he seem ed quite sober. Turnkey Fern was sent for, and ho admitted that Welsh had told him that he was a juror. Ho Ih turn, reported the statement to Captain Neilsen. The Union Pacific and Southern Pacific rail, roads have decided to put In double track systems from Missouri to San Francisco. The Oregon lines will also be double tracked. So far It Is known that three hundred persona have lost their lives by falling walls and flood, due to the earthquake and to a tidal wave.
