?ns PACIFIC Commercial Advertiser. A Thbimisq Incident. Returning from SPijait to New Orleans, we were fortunate to secure passage on a line steamer with but few passengers. Among the ladies one especially interested us. She was the . widow of a wealthy planter, and was returning with only one child to her father's house. Her devotion to the child was raj touching, and the eyes of her old black nurse would fill with tears as she besought her mistress "not to Iotc that boy too much, or the Lord would take him away from ber." We paseexl - through tbe canal at Louisville and stopped fur a few minutes at the wharf, when the nurse wishing to see the city walked out on the guard at tbe back of the boot, where by a sadden etfort the child sprang from her arms into the terrible current that swept towards the tills, and disappeared immediately. The confu-: sion which ensued attracted the attention of a gentle. : man who was sitting in the front part f the boat, j quietly reading. Rising hastily, he asked for some J '- article tue child had worn. The nurse handed him ; tiny spron she had torn off in her effort to retain the babe in her arms. Turninz to a spleudid Xew- a,andl.Asd dog, he pointed first to the apron . and then j ij tne spot where ue child had gone under, i i uu instant tbe noble dog leaped into the rushing vuter, aid he also soon disappeared. By this titLe tbe excitemect was intense, and some persons on shore, supposing that the dog was lost as well as the child, procured a boat and started off in search of the body. Just at thii moment the dog was seen far away with something in his mouth. Bravely he struggled with the wares bat it was evident that his strength was fast failing and more than one breust gave a sigh of reiiei as the beat reached nim, and it was announced that he had the child, ai.d it was still alive. They were brought on shore tlie dog and the child. Oit ing'a single glance to satisfy herself that the child was really living, tbe young mother rushed forward and sinking beside the deg, threw her arms around his neck and burst into tears. Not many could view tbe sight unmoved, and as she caressed and kissed his kgT head, she looked up to bis owner and said : Oh, sir, I must have this dog I am rich take all I have everything but give me my child's pre server. The gentleman smiled and patting his dog's head, said : I am very glad, madam, if he has been of service to you, but nothing in the world could induce me to part with him.' The dog looked as though he perfectly understood what they were talk ing about, and giving his sides a shake laid himself down at hie master's feet with an expression in his large eyes that said plainer than words-' No, nothing shall part us.' & CO., Li A II A IN A MAUI, ARE WW RECEIVING, PER LATE AR KIVAL3, a targe Mock of i Pravl2a. The following passage from Dr. Johnson's Journey to the Hebrides," is a beautiful rendering of a truth which cannot be too often rehearsed in tbe public ear : Life consists not of a series of illustrations, actions, or elegant enjoyments; the greater part of our time passes in compliance with necessities, in tbe perform ance of daily duties, in tbe removal of small inconve niences, in the procurement of etty pleasures; and we are well or ill at n.4, as the main stream of life glides on smoothly, or is ruffled by small obstacles and frequent interruption. The true state of every T nation is the state of common life. The manners of I rk,i on at the old htami of Macy Law, tne people are not to be found in tne schools of Jroraing, or the palaces of greatness, where tbe national character is obscure or obliterated by travel or instruction, by philosophy or vanity; nor is public happiness to be estimated, by the assemblies of the gay or the banquets of the rich. The great mass of nations is neither rich nor gay j they whose aggregate constitutes the people are found in tbe streets and in tbe Tillages, in the shops and the fenns; and from them, collectively considered, must the measure of general prosperity be taken. An they approach to delicacy, a nation is refioed ; as their conveniences are multiplied, a nation, at let a commercial nation, miut be denominated wealth t. R. COADT k CO., Honolulu..
