Fnjtn the Fist, the news by her U tlirce or f.ur da3-s later. Regarding the latest secession news re ceived, the linlhtiii of the 11th says : Tin: Pony Nkws. The news by Pony Express has come importance, though nothing decisive appears to have been yet done. Maj. Anlersoti has evacuated Fort Moultrie but the act has little significance. Fort Moultrie, situated on Sullivan Island, is ap proachable by a land force at low water, and if at tacked by overwhelming numbers could hardly have held nut with the very small garrison it contained. The United States commander, therefore, evacuated it, by withdrawing all his force to Fort Sumter, which is located in the B tv, surrounded by deep water, and only approachable in lx.its. Although Fort Moultrie is ottetiest referreu to in speaking ot the Charleston fortifications. Fort Sumter is really the point of great est importance. It co.-t the General fiovernmetit nearly twice as much money f.r its construction, as Moultrie did. and besides beinz almost impregnable. commands the other fortifications, ami holds the city of Charleston itself at the mercy f its guns and shells. No ship can approach or leave that city so long as Fort Sumter is in the hands of nn enemy, as it is located on the very margin of the channel, and all vessels going iu or coming out arc forced to pass directly under its guns. For all the purposes of the General Government, therefore. Fort Sumter is the essential place, while the other fortifications are com paratively f.f small importance. The South Carolin ians will find it a difficult j -b to c ipture it, even when manned by the small garrison at present there. The Convention at Charleston, it appears, is going ... - . . on Wltli Its secession programme. 1 lie lempor.ary nppotntment of the Federal oflicers State officers also, is a shrewd way of preserving the honor 01 thet-cees- . ... . . - 1 . " n: sioinsts, ami at tne same time 1101 prutobina eoooici with the Federal authorities. It is pretty clearly indicated that nothing precipitate will be done, ari l whatever course the ouih euuer.idcs to take, wi.l lie decided by a General Convention of the Southern States, It is therefore by no means impossible but that the whole difficulty will yet be Compi omi-ed. The Conservatives at the South have been exerting their utmost to elect moderate men to their Conven- j lions; and if there are any Anti-Secessionists at the South, we may expect to bear from them when the ; General Convention of Southern States meets to de- ! t-idc finally the question of going out of, or remaining in, the Union. Southern members of Congress, it is true, still dec! ire that they will listen to no com-' promise; but we by no means are convinced that they ppeak the sentiment of all the Southern people.
