It is rumored that the subsidy is to be cih-red for competition Ly public advertisement. But we ques tion whether any other conipacy than the Cbc now on the route can furnish us steamers every three weeks. The Americau China line runs its steamers monthly, and the new English line will probably not be oftener thaa once a month. Speaking of this English Lne, remiuds us that the Panama Star, received by the last mail, Laa the fol lowing " that the British Peninsular and Oriental Company intends running an oppoaitiuu line from Pa nama to China in connection with the Atlantic Mail Steamship Company's steamers, having bJ their preremt subsidy increased for that purpose from to -VMi sterling." With a subsidy of two and a half millions of dollars per annum, we shout I think they might aflonl to run two steaj'iers a month. At all events, it Licks as if a fierce opposi tion was brewing. The Anniversary of the Sumlay School Union takes place at 10 o'clock to-day at Kawaiahao Church. Five or six hundred children will he present, ami the proceedings will doubtless be interesting. There are delegates here from over one hundred S tbbath schools in the group, and unurnal interest has been manifested in the meetings that have been held. Fears having been entertainel that the schooners Ytltie and ttalmlla, engaged in the Kauai trade, have been blown off to sea, the k'inun and Iiub Roy were fitted np and sailed a day or two since in search of them. The installation of Rer. A. O. Fobdes as pastor of the Kaumakapili church of this city, in place of Rev. Dr. Smith, resigned, takes place at 3 P. M. to-morrow. Rct. It is not unlikely that a thousand emigrants can be procured as readily us a hundred. At all events, the plan of introducing Japanese laborers, which we hare on several occasions advocated, appears likely to have a fair trial. The public may rest as sured that the laborers selected by Mr. Van Reed will be sound and healthy, and not consist of the lame, blind and idiotic characters brought from China. From the information received, we suppose these laborers may be looked for during this and the following month. The accident is an unfortunate one, which no foresight could pre veut, but it shows the necessity of sails as an aux illiary power in navigating this ocean. With sails and one paddle she made 2100 miles in fourteen days.
