A Joliet, 111., clergyman, Mr. Jenkins, has
issued a circular announcing that arrange- J
t ments have been completed whereby, during j
the coining summer, clergymen of nil denouv
inations can procure for themselves, and
members of their families, excursion tickets
from Chicago to San Francisco and return.
These tickets will be sold at 8118 for the

to persons properly accredited, from June 15
to July 15. Each ticket will be good for

the return, to visit Salt Lake City or other
Street Songs in Paris. An English
paper says: Not less than twenty-seven
thousand penny song books are being sold
every day throughout France. What is still
more surprising, is the immense number of
it?rsiMi t,iiai;fu 111 uie iiiiue. it is uie vuj-
torn for a man or a family ot beggars to pro
cure the song books and tramp the whole
country round, singing the songs in them.
This attracts a good deal of attention, and
then they sell the little books. The singers
in France number as high as eight hundred
thousand. They may be divided into three
great orders : those at fixed posts, tramps
who wander about and sing in the streets-,
and those who frequent the low eating houses.
The song book which has been sold the most
is the one containing the Jumine a Jiarbe
which Theresa made notorious. This song,
vvehor. is of German origin.
Lake Tunnels. A decided impetus has
latterly been given to the tunneling business,
and no less than a dozen or more bores are
under way or being projected. The success
of the Chicago Lake Tunnel, in supplying
the city with fresh water, causes the people
of Cleveland to be very sanguine as to the
results of a similar work now being carried
forward for furnishing them with Lake Erie
water. The Cleveland Tunnel, now com
menced and to be completed in 1S72, is to
extend under the bed of the lake for the dis
tance of a mile and a quarter in a straight
line at right angles from the shore. It is to
be elliptical, with a horizontal diameter of
four feet, and a vertical diameter of five feet
two inches. During the past year the plans
of the work have been completed, the sound
ings made, the shore shaft finished, and the
tunnel excavated for a distance of liJO feet.
In the coming spring, the crib is to be placed
at the lake end of the tunnel, and the shaft
sunk, so that the excavations ran advance
from both extremities and meet in the mid
dle. It is estimated that the tunnel will cost
S300.000, necessitate the removal of 220,000
cubic feet of clay, and employ in it construc
tion ovpt 2,000,000 of bricks.

we read of Tubal Cain, who was an artificer in
