The thorough- drying of lumber ia one of .the
most important point) in making a durable struct- V-
ure of wood fr indoor or outuoor use ; and
without douht for ro-jt rjec-ieH of timber it is
bent areoaaplibhed, all things considered, by pil
ing it in eucb a way that currents of air may
freely pat through the inntereticetf, and covering
it so tlutt ruins may not wet it.
There are, however, 'many ttfiecied of timber,
amimg winch may be Bieotioncd the . wood pf
'some of our American elm?, which season very
slowly by the natural drying process, and many
kindrt of thu'ocf tu;iy be dried tnritli ffukker by
It should le borne in mind that the natural
moisture or cap C the wood is a solption of a
'riouH subtttanced in water, and that it is inclosed
in minute capillary ecllnand tubes which strongly
attract and hold it, when in immediate contact
with ir, but exert this attraction only aC an in
ecnmble distance, so that when the fluid they
contain is removed they will not, by virtue of
their structure, re-ubsorl tuoitture, unites again
brought in contact with it.
Moat woxlrt are, however, more or less hygro
scopic, and brrnk or swell with the dry or moist
condition of the atmoepGere. It follows from
this that no wood unprotected by paint or var
nish can long remain much dryer than the condi
tion of the atui.jnphere around it admits.
Ltat the st'nfrible moiriture of the air decreases,
all other things being equal, as its temperature
increatef, and Fobstanceo having '. affinity for
moibture w ill absorb or retain much less moisture
from the atmosphere at elevated temperatures.
.The common drying houses, where artificial lieat
.is used, work upon this principle,, and-are,. lbr
the most part, very satisfactory in their operation,
as they can be made of any extent, and large
quantities of material may be seasoned by their
Small quantities of timber may,- however, be
quick) v and thoroughly fce:vsouei by steaming.
The philoeoihy pf this prow-wbicli, if prop
erly jrfornn-.i, dtc not injure the strength or
durability of t!ie tiiuber ia very aim pie. A very
, large percentage, of the sap in all: kinds of wood

ixtecn hundred ajid fifty times.. It follows that
if wood be heated to 212", the boiling point of
water, the capillary cella can contain only one
.sixteen hundred and Citwtb aa muob water as at
'utdinary . toinperaturea, tbo exmded water es
caping as steam. The proportion of moisture let
in the wood i s, after steaming, leee than that de
manded by its ordinary hygroscopic condition.
At least we have found it so for certain species of
hickory and white ash, which increased in weight
after being removed frotn. tLe hlcautei and their
surfaces had become dry.
The steaming should be done gradually fjiat
is, time should be given for the "woodto gradually
Tine in temreratnre, and so that tlie sap may es
cape gradually' from the cells without rapturing
thlta bj its expaoeiye force when ' converting
toem into steam. -
A cylinder, made of galvanized iron, with rit
ited and soldered joints, makes a cheap and good
steamer. The steam aliould be generated in a
suitable boiler and allowed to escape at two or
three piunds prendre, which,' a we have fcaid,
should be gradually reached in proportion to the
size ot the pieces which it is desired to season.
The wood shoo Id be heated throughout its mass
to 212", and remain so for a little time. It may
be then put aside for use, and will be found fit to
