Washington, Aug. 19. The Secretary of the

attention to the recent law of Congress relative
to steam vessels, and the rules lately adopted by
the Board of Supervising Inspectors, and enjoin

New York, Aug. 19. A Tunis correspondent,
under date July 24th, states that there is a prob
ability of war between Egypt and Turkey, and
that the personal relations of the Khedive and
Sultan are far from being friendly. Some time
ago a revolt occurred at a village in Arabia, near
the Red Sea terminus of the Suez Canal, and to
suppress it 20,000 troops were dispatched there by
order of the Sultan. There the troops remain,
and the Viceroy of Egypt, dreading the hazards
of war, seems unwilling to take steps which may
indicate his willingness to accept the gauntlet
thus thrown down by Turkey. The surmise is
that Turkey, desiring to resist the encroachments
of Russia in the East, wishes to offer the Empire
of Germany free transit through Egypt, which a
war might be likely to secure, in return for the
aid Germany might give Turkey in the Indies.

ing the Dublin riot, says P. J. Smyth, member
of Parliament, was proceeding with bis speech,
when suddenly there shot into view round tbe
corner of tbe Wellington Monument, a consider
able body of police, truncheon in band, who,
without uttering a word of warning, notice, or
expostulation, began to strike mercilessly on all
sides. If an impartial enquiry be instituted by
Government, I believe it will be found that
throughout the period during which so many
dreadful wounds were given Ty the police, no
resistance was offered, and none could be offered.
No defence was attempted beyond the use of
umbrellas, in a few cases, to ward off the show
ering blows of the loaded truncheons. Every one
within reach was assailed. Newspaper reporters
(conservative and liberal), many of tbem with
note-book and rencil in hand some personally
known to the police for years past as members of
tbe press were as savagely attacked as anyone
else. Flymg victims were tripped, in order tbat
while on the ground they might be bludgeoned.
A person was quietly walking away alone, when
some policeman ran at him, and one of tbem
dealt bim a fearful kick on the hip which stag
gered him ; before be could utter a cry, another
blow from a truncheon felled him to the earth in
gouts of blood.
