Tlte latter were tlieo com pel led
to deliver a verdict ia the matter, by leing locked
np in the jury-room with nothing to eat or drink
until they submitted, which, it maybe imagined,
did Dot take very long. As to the verdict, it mat
ters as little to us on which fcide it was given, aa
it did to tho parties in the case, liut uow comes
the interesting part of the transaction. After the
aforesaid verdict was solemnly read in open Court,
and the twelve exhausted jury-men had re pen
sively and solemnly bobbed their neads in assent
tliereto, it was asoertnined, through the advice
of aa ouUide counselor, that the. Court had no
jurisdiction to entertain the case, it being one of

The unfortunate parties in the affair, from no
fault of their own, liad thus been allowed, first
through the ignorance of their counsel and then by
the ignorance of the.tribunal to which they applied
for redrcas, to incur, for them, a huge bill of ex
penses, with nothing to show for it. ,
It is a mortifying reflection that n blunder of!
this kind is postsiblo in any Court of this King
dom presided over by a Judge of tbe Supreme
Court. That Court ia tbe final tribunal of the
nation; it should express the supremacy of tbe
law.. It is nccetwary that its Judges should not j
only be wise, candid and thoughtful men, but I
learned scholars io the science of law; otherwi j
our Supreme Court will become a reproach, arid :
its high position as thejimpartial dispenser of Jae- j
tice and the bulwark of human rights will be lost. '
It ia scarcely possible that Judge Widemann
has not by this time had sufficient experience on
the liench to he convinced of his own unfitness'
for the position. IT, however he is not so con-j
vinced, it is only a trifle more astonishing than ;
the calm confidence with which he accepted the ;

disgrace in one's failing to possess the requisite
qualifications for a Judge of the Supreme Court;

Tub Battle of Sedan. Monday was the anni
versary of the great battle, September 2d, 1870,
when Napoleon III. laid down bis arms and virtually
brought to an end the second Empire of France, in
the presence of the victorious Germans. In com
uemoration of the event, the Consular and some of
our Grnnan residents displayed the national flag,
and tbe North German ship Georges, Capt. Bebrens,
was profusely and tastefully decorated with bunting.
No Fexiodt. It was not until after tbe Olympia
bad sailed that our attention wss drawn to the fact
that sbe brought little or no freight for Honolulu.
In fact ber capacity would not have allowed the t
bringing of wbat oflered. In consequence there has
been no little complaint among merchants who bave
been disappointed in getting supplies of goods that
had been ordered " per steamer.' The inconveni
ence and injury to inter-island trade is represented
as serious. Meantime it is reported that tbe 7faAo
will sail from San Francisco promptly on ber schedule
dsy, September 7th.
Assault and IUttert.- Wednesday morning a
difficulty occurred on board one ot the English ships
lying at tbe Esplanade, wherein a Chinaman belong
ing to the vessel was assaulted and battered by the
mate. Complaint was subsequently made to tbe
police and tbe offender arrested, ana too case will
bt beard this morning. We have beard the remark I
made that it was surprising that a policeman should
have been standing by wben tbe assault was made,
and not offer to interfere. It may not be known to 1
everybody that by tbe stipulations of the French j
Treaty, which apply as well to other nations, the
local authorities bave no right to interfere on board i
of a foreign vessel in case of "crimes, misdemeanors j
and other matters of difference' between tbe officers j
and crew, and the policeman probably bad been .
instructed as to that fact. The restriction, however I
Ia an absurd and mischievous one, and will doubt
less be removed ere long.
