Describing the Inebriate Asylum at Ward's Isl
and, the New York Tribune says : Within the
past four years about one hundred women have
occupied rooms in the asylum. Of these nearly
one-third have been ladies moving in the highest
circles of society. They were all middle-aged,
and nearly all bad been'married.'
It is reported that Robert Bonner will retire
from the active management of the New York
Ledger next spring. He has now been at it twenty
years, and in tbat time has converted a paper which
was entirely aa advertising sheet into a paper into
which no amount of money could purchase the
way for an advertisement.
The inventive genius of the country, according
to tbe Patent Office returns, baa had a most extra
ordinary development within tbe past five years.
Up to 1856 the patents but once reached 1,000
per annum. From tbat period until 1860 no year
showed 5,000 patents, while the average of five
years past has been over 13,000 per annum.
The price of a wife in tbe Zulu country, South
'Africa, is fixed by law at ten cows- The pur
chaser can give more if he chooses, but the seller
cannot demand more. This law was passed in
consequence of a speculator having once brought
up all the young girls and demanded exorbitant
prices for then.
