Anticipations or Keteni;!. In Scotland it is
customary, when a death occurs in a family, to
send the neighbours an invitation to attend the
funeral. A guid aald wife" was pasted over
in one of these dispensations, and, with a heart
full of indignant fcrief, she watched the funeral
gathering round bcr neighbour's door. It was
fimlly too mach for her, and site exclaimed, io a
tone of forced resignation, Aweel, aweel, we'll
hae a corpse o oar ain in our bouse some day !
See then wba'U be invited !"
Joaquin Miller was lately in Rome, and the
correspondent of an American contemporary tells
how he looked ami tock oa" at an erening re
ception, where he neglected uotb broadcloth and
gloTea,' his hair hunting orer his forehead, and
bis thin boots being without polish. 'That's
Joaquin Milter," said my partner; ' he is lirine
down in the theatre of Marcellus, among the o'd
iron and scrap shops, studying the people and
neglecting the form and ceremony which society
imposes on all out 1U pet lions.' 1 was seated
with him later, when he was invited by a lady to
dance. lie declined, with the excuse that be had
retired from the carpet since he got a bullet in
bis leg. Perhaps ilr. Miller would giro as the
war-dance. suggested a gentleman near. ' Ob,
do, Mr. Miller i pleaded several young ladies at
once. Well now, said be, ' it was only two or
three evenings ago when, after being begged for
an hour and a half, I agreed to try the war-dance,
but I had scarcely begun preliminaries wben the
ladies objected, and ofcourse I had to give it op.'
Why. how strange, Mr. Miller ! What did you
da?" Naturally, aid he, I was going to dance
it in costume, but I hadn't gone any farther than
taking ofTco.it and vest when the people objected,
as I told you. "
Mask Twai on Inscsancx. At a banquet
given at Hartford, Conn., on the evening of the
2Uh u!t., to Mr. Cornelius Walford, the well
known Enli insurance author, Mark Twain
delivered the following characteristic speech,
which is spoken of by the Courant as the feature
of the occasion :
MARK TWAIN'S SPIXCH.
fJoTLKXE : I am glad indeed to assist in wel
coming the distinguished guest of this occasion to
city who" Time as an insurance center has ex
tended to all land.-, and given ns the name of the
quadruple band of brothers working sweetly band
aai hani tiie Colt's arms company making the
destruction of our race easy and convenient, our
life insurance eitixens paying for tbe victims wben
they pass away. Mr. Batterson perpetuating their
memory with his stately monuments, and our
re insurance companies taking care of their here
after. I am glad to assist in welcoming our guest
first, beeauae be is an Englishman, and I owe
a. heavy debt of hospitality to certain of bis fellow
countrymen ; anJ secondly, because be is in
sympathy with insurance and has been the means
of muking many other men cast their sympathies
in the same direction.
Certainly there is no nobler field for human
effort than the insurance line of business, especi
ally accident insurance. Ever since I have been
director ia an accident insurance company I
have felt that f am a better man. Life has
seemed more precious. Accident has assumed a
kindlier aapect. Distressing special providences
have lost half their horror. 1 look upon a crip
ple now with affectionate interest as an adver
tisement. I do not seem to care for poetry any
more. I io not care for politics. Even agricul
ture does not excite me. But to me now there
is a charm abont a railway collision that is un
speakable. There is nothing more beneficent than accident
insurance. I have seen an entire family lifted
out of pverty and into affluence by the simple
boon of a broken leg. I have had people come
to me on crutches, with tears in their eyes, to
bless this beneficent institution. ' In all my expe
rience of life I have seen nothing so serapbM as
as (he look thai comes into a freshly mutilated
man's lace when he feels in bis vest pocket with
bis remaining hand and finds his accident ticket

will remark here, by way of an advertisement,
that that noble charity which we have named the
iiartf.,rd Accident Insurance Company is an in
stitution which is to be depended upon. A man
is bound to prosper who gives it his custom.
maa can take out a policy io it and not get .crip
pled before the year is out. Now, there n one
!;r,r m .n who had been disappointed so often
with other companies that be had grown disheart
ened, his appetite left him. l ceased to smile
and lire was but a weariness. Three weeks ago

you to our other adertiseroents.
I will say in conclusion that my share of the
welcome to our guest is none the less hearty be
cause I talk so much nonsense, and I know that
