complained of the irregularity of the verb " to

A wild-eyed man, carrying his hat in his hand,
entered the depot yesterday and called out to a
man who was wheeling a baggage-truck along :
Where's the train?" "What train?" "Any
train any train! My wile inn't ten rods behind,
and she's got an axe-handle over her shoulder
and sulphur in her eyes."
A physician was called upon to attend a seam
stress who felt indisposed. He inquired as to
her health, and she replied very appropriately :
' Well, it is about sew sew, doctor, but seamB
worse to-day, and I have frequent stitches in the
side." The doctor hemmed as he felt her pulse,
and said the would mend soon, and left a pre
scription. When Mrs. tierkes of Sixth street says she
will do this or that, she means what she says.
She told lerkes the other day that if he didn't
bring her a new dress at noon ehe would go up
town and run him in debt fifty dollars. The
dress didn't come, and she went up town, tramped
around for three hours, and was told by thirty
eight different Den that they wouldn't trust

A Griswold street fruit seller yesterday ob
served an old man pinching a cocoanut and
handling it as if he had hold. of an apple, and he
stepped to the door and asked : " Would you
like to buy a nut?" " Waal, I thought some of
it," replied the old man ; " but I guess I'll wait
till they get a little softer its coming on to the
sickly season and a filler ought to be careful."

A Cincinnati woman says : I never knew but
one woman in my life who etiose to make her
husbands shirts, and confessed she liked to do it;
and ehe had nothing else to do ; could leave them
any moment ; had some one else to make the
buttonholes ; had ready-made bosoms, and, when
she finished her half dozen, was presented by her
tlelighted spouse with twenty dollars in green
backs. No wonder she liked it."
The Counril Bluff's Nonpareil vouches for the
following: "A fellow challenged five men to
combat not far from Avoca last week. The five
reported, and our hero said he wanted to take
the best man first. The five began arguing as to
who was the best man. Then began business.
They fought and fit, and gouged and bit, and
niggled in the mud lor fifteen minutes without
arriving at any definite conclusion on the subject,
while the challenger eat on a log and beamed a
kindly smile on them."
The other day a Detroit mother poured some
ink on the pantry shelf near the sugar-box, and
went up stairs, leaving her small son playing
with the cat. When she came down, the boy
sat by the window, wearing a placid, innocent
look, but there were ink-stains on bis fingers.
"There! you've been at the sugar!' she ex
cUimed, as she seized him by the collar. " Moth
er, do you think I'd steal sugar?" he asked in a
tone of surprise. Look at those stains on your
fingers! "A hat made 'em?" Those stains,
mother?" Yes, those stains." Well, I can
not tell you a bold lie, mother I think I've eom
menced to mortify !" She wasn't quite sure, and
he was allowed to go out and play circus.
Rather Serious Gas. A very pretty miss of
about seventeen went to a Dr. K to have a
troublesome tooth extracted, and after dreading
it awhile, at length resolved to take a dose of
iaughing gas to take the sharp edge off. A lady
friend accompanied her," and was quite anxious
to note the effect of the subtle gae upon her
charming and vivacious companion. She did not
have to wait long, for no sooner had the influence
begun to manifest itself, than she. threw her
plump, dimpled arms around the neck of the
susceptible dentist, exclaiming as she visited his
lips with her own, " uti, you aear aaning aucit
of a mac, you are good enough to eat !"
Of course Ebe knew nothing about the laugh
which followed, or the confusion on the part of
the dentist, any more than she knew what she

extracting the teeth that could offend so sweet a

When she recovered from its effect her friend
asked her how she liked it, aud she proclaimed
the effect delightful, and even asked the dentist if
he would not give it to her again.

She was then informed by her companion what
she had done, and coloring up slightly, and cast
