The mot important item of news by this ar

Stat4, pu&pended ftyment on August 2Q. At
the commencement of banking lonrH on that
morning, pjmptoms of a run on the Bank were
evident, which continued throughout the day.
until 2.20 p. u. when the doors were cljped. At
i the National TJjld Bank and Trust Co.. and at
the Ilibcrnia Bank, crowds pressed upijn the
clerks, hastily demandire pajment. It was a

in the corridors became so large that depositors
stood five or six deep nil along the
line of the
paying counters, each struggling to get his check
to the teller in advance of bis neighbor, and the
crowd soon resolveu itselr into a pushing, equeez
ing, struggling mob." The excitement was in
creased when the doora were closed and the
announcement made by Mr. Ralston that pay
ment was etopnea.
After bank hours, says one paper, " the prin
cipal indignation expressed for the supposed in
stigators of the trouble was against the publish
ere of the Bulletin and Call, who had, by con
stant attacks upon Mr. Ralston, President of the
Rank, representing him as the Boss Tweed of
San Francisco and a political schemer, finally
succeeded in undermining the credit of the
Bank." " So intense waa the indignation against
these journals, that at one time it was feared that
the excited crowd would resolve itself into a mob
and attack the offices ; but better counsels pre
vailed, and the city waa spared the disgrace ol a
riot. At 5 o clock, 31r. Kaleton met the repre
sentatives of the press and others, and stated that
there was no question but that the Bank would
be able to meet all its obligations ; that over
1,400 ,U00 in coin, besides other securities, had
been paid out.
On the 31st it waa announced by the Directors
that the assets ot the Bank were nominally six),
000,000, and that there was a surplus of six or

It was stated that the stockholders of the Bank
were among the richest men in California, repre-
senting property moaerateiy estimated at jou,
000,000, and the public were assured that they
would resuscitate the Back. Later, it was an
nounced that the resumption would take place in
a few days, and this was received by the public
with the highest satisfaction.
Meantime, on the 27th, the day following the
suspension of the bank of which he was I resident,
the city was startled by the announcement of the
death ry drowning in the bay ot W ni. u. Kalston
Lnder the circumstances, rumor at once attrin
uted his death to suicide, but a searching inquiry
by a coroner's inquest, a post mortem examina
tion, and an analysis ot tne contents ot the
stomach ol the deceased, all went to show that
the death was accidental. His life was insured
for some $300,000. The funeral, very largely
attended, took place on the 30th, and the city
was dressed in mourning garb in respect to the
memory or one who had been her most conspicu
ous citizen, and who had done much to beautify
the citv and develon the resources of the coast

as well as Messrs. J. C.Merrill ic Co., immedi'

pension of the bank, offered to protect all drafts
of ours, and proceeded to do so. All our un

transit are fully covered by remittances, and there
will be no delay in their payment by Messrs.

Honolulu, Sept 19, 1875."
There having been disparaging misrepresenta
tions made by parties in San Francisco in regard
to the action taken by the firm of Messrs. J. C.
Merrill & Co., in refusing payment of their ac
ceptances maturing at tbe bank of California
after its suspension, done solely for the protection
of Messrs. Bishop & Co., of this city, we are
requested by the last named firm to state, that
the generous and disinterested course pursued by
Mr. J. C. Merrill in the matter, has their hearty
approval, and is fully appreciated.
The steamship lasco de Gama, Capt. Rice, is
advertised by the P. M. Co. to leave San Fran
cisco for the Colonies Oct 9, yia Honolulu.
The state elections throughout California took
Elace on the 1st inst., and it appears that the
lemoeratic candidate for CJovcrnor, Vm. Irwin,
has been elected by a large majority. It is sup
posed that Clayton, Republican, has been elected

An Elephant Picks a Young Woman's
A correspondent of the Kansas City Times sajs:
On Tuesday the entire population, except a blind
women and Rouee, went over to eee Queen's
great show and have a nice time. A young lady
from across the Jersey took her suitor and an
opera glass. The young lady says 6he thought
the performance real romantic until she stopped
to see the elephant.
She wore one of those pockets behind, in
which, besides her handkerchief, she had depos
ited an apple, a handful of peanuts, quarter of
a pound of gum-drops, a little bottie of ammonia,
and some other trifles. She and her swain, after
admiring the complexion of the hugh beast,
turned their backs upon bim to watch the mon
keys and the live kangaroo, and gaze into each
others"s eyes; to do this the better they leaned
back against the rope which enclosed the stately
monarch, who saw the apple protruding from the
pocket of the unconscious fair one. He hesitated
a moment, and was lost to all sense of honor or
self-respect, for with shuffling movement he emu
lated the example of our common mother, plucked
and ate the fruit, returned to the pocket
and scooped out the gum drops end peanuts,
with a ely wink at his nephew, who was looking
on with anxiety at the proceeding. But in the
last mouthful the majestic beast took in the
amonia bottle by mistake the cork came out, and
about an ounce of hartshorn ran down the throat
of the greedy beast. This beverage is said to
nave a reviving and stimulating influence, and in
this case it proved its power, for a more revived
elephant waa never seen on earth. With a wild
yell he grabbed tbe protuberence behind the lady
which had been the cause of his disaster; she
was "pulled back' some before, but as the
exasperated trunk yanked at tbe bustle and ac
cessories, all former attcmps at that style of
wearing gear seemed pale and sickly; everything
was "pulled back" until the young women looked
like the statue of Xiobe in blue calico. The
young man with great presence of mind shouted
" shoo," and the gentlemanly clerk of the ele-
ihant, with a long prod, persuaded the beast to
ct up. But the fun was over for tbe day ; cake
bad no charms, and soda no balm for these two
souL, who walked home with but a single thought
about wild animals.
