WHOLE NO. 103:5.
Jonathan, by aBritish Artist.
I log a Yankee, Utoat him an growth;
A hero eeldom atupij, alow, or flat.
Bat often oer abarp, or faat, or both
A aw.-lf-willrtJ, many-titled Democrat,
equire in New York, ami Captain in the Wear,
A JcJge on California' golden strand;
la the sunny South a Colonel, at the fcasl;
But Deacon in the true old Yankee UnJ.
A rapid traveler to walk with,
Alike through flowera and thorns bound to get on;
Eaty t J trade, or smoke, or drink, or talk with.
But Tory hard for any one to sit on.
Who ilormi a battery like an old crusader;
Give freedom to a race some careless minnte;
Bat would buy Satan's homestead aa a trader.
And ardently arer 44 There5 million la It."
To whom equality' a preciou gem;
Though sometimes he may kick Chinese or darkies,
And in bis secret bosom doth contemn
AH foreigners below the rack of marquis,
la Maine, who ranks in Calvin's fire-proof class;
la Kansas worships God with strapped revolver;
Blylbe dances, in New Orleans, after mass;
la Brooklyn sobs a tear o'erflowed dissolver.
W ho think a school house is a sacred place
And education cure all mortal phthisic,
But look aakance at high scholastic grace,
On Greek and Latin, French and metaphyaics.
Heedless what charm on painted canvas glow :
Indifferent, oft, to strophe and to stanza
But listening with loving ear when blow
The western wind from newly-found bonanza.
Yet who, though willing after gold to dash
Through sea and Are, and gloomy ore-lined cavern.
Not often boards his hardly-gathered cash
But nobly builds a fourteen-story tavern.
Such is the subject of these "brief remarks;
A lawlrss, pious, free-souled money-maker;
Who bis cigar would light at Pluto' sparks,
And then try buying heaven by the acre.
London Globe.
VARIETY.
Tbe most glowing passage in a minister's ser
mon will attract scarcely one-half the attention
that centre upon the man in the congregation
who blows his nose.
A Norwich man has invented a calendar good
for 100 years. You buy it on trial, and if yon
don't like it at the end of that time he takes it
back and refunds the money.
How much to take me to the Cathedral?'
asked a tourist just arrived in Dublin of a hack
man. " Well," eaid Pat, "the meanest man 1
ever took gave me three shillings."
The Nevada Transcript says: If Absalom had
had as little hair on the back of his head, as some
of tbe best looking men in this place, he would
have been alive to-day.
A Sacramento man gained four and a hall
pounds, weight in one week by eating oatmeal.
But he is wearing out his Ulster overcoat scratch
ing bis back against the door.
An article is going the rounds of the Press
headed, A Girl with Webster's Head." We
shouldn't think Webster's head would be worth
much to a girl now unless it's on a live young
man named Webster.
Tiie owner of a pair of bright eyes assures us
that tbe prettiest compliment she ever received
came from a child of four years. The little fellow,
after looking intently at her for a moment, in
quired naively: Are your eyes new ones?"
Prof. Proctor having asserted that the moon
had been dead for years, the Danbury AYu is
moved to suggest that " Perhaps it was the smell
or the decomposition which lead people to infer
that it was made of cheese." And it mite be so.
A Chinamen up country, whose life was ineur
ed for a large amount, was seriously hurt some
time ago by falling from a wagon. There was
some doubt of his ever getting better, and at
length one of his friends wrote to the insurance
company : " Charlie half dead, likee half money."
" What is Brooklyn doing for the cause of
morality?" asked a correspondent. It is proposed
to sub-let this conundrum to somebody who
would have nothing else to do for the next twelve
months but give his whole mind to it. Brooklyn
Argus.
A London doctor has discovered that you may
cure the toothache by dissolving half a dram of
bicarbonate of soda in an ounce of water and
holding the solution in your mouth. If this really
is a certain remedy for the most terrible of all
sublimated agonies, the doctor who gives it to the
world deserves to have his name written in letters
of gold upon every jaw in the land to which it
may bring relief.
Tus Origin of tue Pin-Back Dress. Mrs.
O'Flannigan was an Irish lady, witli limited
means and a good constitution. She, therefore,
like a sensible woman, used the latter to preserve
the former by taking in washing, and soon be
came noted as a purifier of soiled linen.
Mrs. Judy was a widow, having buried her "dear
Mike "a few days after bis return from a country
Fair with his head broken in several places.
" Small loss," said the widow-to herself; yet she
waked him in a manner worthy of the O Flanni
gan's in olden times.
Now Judy lived in that "modern Babylon"
called London, and it chanced one day that Ma
dame la Mode, a noted French modiste, while vis
iting " perfide Albion," required the services of
one of her cralt, and, being recommended to J udy,
called, and foand her busy over her tubs, her
ample skirt well pinned back, and her person re
sembling a huge close-pin with a sheet tied around
it.
Madame was charmed ; to her it seemed a novti
sight, as they do things differently in la belle
France. There the washerwomen are not troubled
with long skirts ; besides, they generally use the
river for a washtub. She immediately felt in
spired wiih the birth of a new fashion, and, on
her return to Paris, produced tbe dress called the
Blanch isseuse," which, meaning simply washer
woman, did not 6uit on this side of the water,
and the one now in use was adopted in its Btead.
Better than Nothing. A good old Methodist
lady, very particular and very pious, once kept a
boarding house in Boston.
Staunch in her principles, she would take no
one to board who did not hold to the eternal pun
ishment of a large portion of the human race.
But the people were more intent on carnal com
forts than spiritual health, so that in time her
bouse became empty, much to her grief and alarm.
After some time a bluff old sea captain presented
himself at the door, and the old lady answered
the call. .
Servant: ma'am. Can you give me board for
two or three days ? tlot my ehip here, and shall
be off soon as 1 load. '
Wa-al, I don't know,' 6aid the old lady.
Oh. house full, eh?'
No ; but '
But what, ma'am ?'
' I don't take any unclean or carnal people in
my house. What do you believe?'
About what?
Why, do you believe that anyone will be con
demned V
Ob, thunder! yes.
Do you ?" said the good woman brightening up.
Well, how many souls do you think will be in
fire eternally V
Don't know, ma.am, really; never calculated
tfcat.'
Can't you guess?'
Cant say perhaps fifty thousand.'
Wa'al, hem !' mused the good woman, I
guess I'll take you; fifty thousand is better than
nothing.'
