A ball struck a little boy in the eye last week : !
strange to say, the bawl immediately came out j
of his mouth. j
" Tbey fired two shots at him," wrote an Irish j
reporter; the first shot killed him, but the
second was not fatal." j
Absalom wore long hair and see what became ;
of him. He differed from Samson and some ul
the latter-day preachers, however. There was
no woman in his cae.
It w observed that there are few tilings that
will make a man carry his head so straight as to
have a ragged neck-binding on his shirt collar,
with plenty of starch on it, well ironed in.

In a street car yesterday a man's breath smelled
so strong of whisky that a gentleman moved
across the car to get out of the circle. Any

A Little Ahead of Noah. A dispute once
arose between two Scotchmen, named Campbell
and M 'Lean, upon tlie antio-;,vof their families.
The latter woulj not aIloy, rted pathe Campbells
had any right to rank wit Yellow oj'Leans in anti
quity, who, be insisted, wJ" existence as a
clan since the beginning o vorld. Campbell
bad a little moro Ciblical knowledge than his an-
tagonist, and asked him if the clan of the M 'Leans
was before the flood. "Flood! what flood?"
asked M'Lean. "The flood, you know, that
drowucd all the world but Noah and his family
and his flock," said Campbell. " Pooh ! you
and your flood ! said M'Lean; " my clan was
afore the flood." I have not read in my Bible,"
said Campbell, of any one of the name of
M'Lean going into Noah's ark." "Noah's ark!"
retorted M'Lean in contempt; who ever heard
of a M'Lean that hadn't a boat of his ain?"
Mark Twain's References. And Mark Twain
made up his mind that he must marry, and that
no one else but that particular girl could be Mrs.
Twain. He set about that courtship in his usual
solw, deliberate, drawling fashion, because Mark
Twain, in the conception and execution of every
piece of business; rates far above the mere liter
ary adventurer. He is a man orinscru table depth.
He goes for his game in the most extraordinary
fashion. He drops on it and makes his points
as he does his stories, in a manner and from a di
rection least expected by the looker on. Well,
there was a father-in-law to be won as well as
the girl, and the father-in-law had to be carried
first, like the outer parallel in a line of defense.
The father-in-law was immersed in business.
He hadn't much time to think of family matters,
but at last it occured to him that Mark had be
come very frequent at the liou-e and that his ob
jective point seemed to be the daughter. So he
called Mark aside one day and said : " Mr. Twain,
you seem to be paying attentions to my daughter..
Now, we all like you pretty well, you know, and
we are of course all acquainted with your reputa
tion as a literary man. Still, in other respects
you are a stranger to us. and some references as
to your character and standing are desirable."
That's very reasonable," said Mark. " That's
very natural and paternal. It's just what I should
do were I in your position. I guess I can give
you some names that will satisfy you. Now,
there's Mr. Goodman of the Territorial Enter
prise. nd there "b Mr. Frederick McCrellish of
the Alta California. You write to them. I
guesa they'll give me a good character. I guess
they will lie for me. I've djoe the same for them
whenever a requisition has been made upon me."
But Mark married the girl, notwithstanding.
