The literary and Oratorical exerciies did honor
to the students and institution.
The declamations were one and all rendered in a
clear and forcible manner.
The compositions showed thought and an appre

A composition on "Insect Life" was of peculiar
merit, considering the age of the writer and the
limited opportunity he has had to study this
particular branch of natural science.
The editorial articles in the " Centennial Icbo,"
elicited general commendation. There was a pleas
ing variety of style and the subjects were well
handled. A duet " Listen to the fairy feet," was

reading exercises which had received sufficient
prominence in classes.

suggest that an improvement might be made in
chorus singing, and the school needs a good collection
of glees for such occasions.

that the plans of the Minister of Finance have been
put forward in advance of any Acln to carry them

subject, the Minister have had ample time to con

them is not pretty nearly the best general plan
that can be adopted, I agrei- with Mr. Davies, that
it ought to be, and tbe Ministers can have no apol

Mr. Dayies has done a public aervice by boldly

' Ihe Li-rat ExpoMtion The Hawaiiau DepartmeDt 1 and to
I Sozzevtlon The Treat.
New Yobk, June 11, 1870.
My dear Commercial:
We left the Centennial City yesterday after three j
busy and laborious weeks of seeing the Exposition, j
Anything that might be said would seem so :
imperfect in view of the great exhibit, that I j
inclined to say nothing, leaving descriptiona and j
enumerations to the industrious correspondents of j
all the papers who are wri .ing daily and to such
correspondents I must leave you and all our Island 1
people, yet must say a word about our own little ,
Hawaiian section. It was a delightful surprise
to find that we made such a very creditable show; ;
of course our effort could not with advantage be ,
compared absolutely and eimp'y with the display ;
made by great countries exhibiting here all their ,
resources and skill, but comfaratively, and for us, :
it is honorable and handsome. Entering the main 1
building bv a door near the south east corner, near !
which the "city car lines terminate, we come at once ,
to Hawaii. The space is enclosed by a tasteful j
structure, which the photographs taken will ;
represent to you; glass ca&es give the visitor outside :
a view of coral, ferns, the feather capes and leis, the ;
fine map of the Islands, photographs, &c, Ln. I
Within the structure is everything else which was
sent, I need not enumerate, all tastefully and
effectively arranged. Too much credit cannot be
awarded to our Commissioner, Mr. Hitchcock, for
bis management of the business from the beginning.
Of course we have met him daily during our visit,
as we always want, first thing, to Eee what Hawai
ian we might meet, or who had registered their
names, either our own reti dents or visitors.
I am impressed with the advantage and impor
tance to any country, especially to such little ones
as ours, anxious to be favorably known to the
world, and to attract population and capital from
abroad, of " putting in an appearance" at these
general DieetingB of the nations. It would have
U-en a great mistake if we had not appeared here.
All that has been done has been favorably considered
by the public, and the press. Many inquiries are
made as to our climate, soil, resources, our people,
our government, and our King, who-e visit here
made so happy an ioipriislou. It was wise to pro
vide the liberal supply of Thrum's Almanac and
Whitney's Guide Book, for distribution to elitora
and correspondent", Commissioners of other coun
tries and other intelligent visitors. These pamphlets
answer most of the questions which we have been
! asked in every place dnrine; all cur visit in America.
! The " fuide Pv.k" wa nrt cot when we left home.

that I cannot do bettor than reproduce it hi-re. .Mr.
Davit say : " There are many who will have no
benefit from the Treaty clergymen, pilndpala
and teachers of schools, families living on small
fixed iucoines and others whoso names we can fill
in from our own circles ; and it would be a scan
dal and an injustice to saddle them with such ft
list of taxes as the Minister of Finance proposes,
and for such aa ol joct the relief of Agriculture.
To many, our cheap housekeeping baa be 0 a

he and others were startled " when the Govern

written the above M iiti nce und.f the influence of
that state of mind, but f am nurrrir-d that a shrewd
man of business' sbonld even under those circum
stances have committed himself to a statement ao
much at variance with the facts a that contained
in the last nart ol it. Why Mr. Editor, it neenis to
me that it is just the necessaries ol life which are
1 from taxert bv the nronosed chance. Kut
it will peihapsbe more taiiefactory to place In
twn columns the main necessaries of lite which
enter into the question of housekeeping. In one
column those on which 10 per cent is taken off, and
in the other thou- including home of the same lux
mie on which 1 percent is to be added. Aa ii well
known, the pric which will bo paid by the con
sumer will be neither aa much as 10 per cent lens
than he baa been paying on the tme class nor 15
per cent more on the otlier class, inasmuch as the
raien of duty are 011 foreign cost, not on the price
here. But as the object is comparison it may not
be necessaiy to consider this point at preseat, and
any housekeeper w ho is in the habit t4 keeping an
account ol lii expenses may estimate what he will
