The Verdict. Mrs. Carr, of Quebec, hanged
herself with her false hair. The coroner's verdict
was that the Carr was demolished by a misplaced
switch. "
Wouldn't Grow Freeh ! wonder why my

Invented. A new style trowscrs for boys has
been invented in Boston. The articles have a cop
per scat, ebect-iron knees, riveted seams and water-proof
pockets to hold broken eggs.
Poached. Aij? these eggs poached?" inquir
ed a customer of a colored restaurant keeper, at
an Alabama station. "Yc,8ah," replied Sambo,
Dey is dat i, do chickens, wat laid 'cm war."
Oil wells are bo thick in some parts of Pennsyl
vania that it isn't safe for a stranger to venture
forth alone after dark without a liberty-pole
strapped across his shoulders.
You may Know. When a woman cornea to the
door and calls after her husband, "IIcn-R-E-E"
, finishing the last syllable in capital letters
you may know that she is not in a capital hu
mor.
Another man, whoso memory ought not to be
permitted to perish, is gone, lie lived near t red
ericksburg, irginia, and his father was kicked
out of a watermelon patch by George Washing
ton at a perioa oriue when George could kick
like a mule aud wore Idng twelves.

A lady of great beauty and attractiveness, who
waa an ardent admirer or Ireland, once crowned
her praises ot it at a party, by eaying, "1 think
I must have been meant for an Irishwoman."
" Cross the channel, madam," remarked Samuel
Lover, the novelist, who happened to be present,
Millions will say that you were meant for an
Irishman.'
The other day a minister oflered a prayer at the
laying of a hrst eton. A young reporter Dustied
np and said : I wish you would give mo the
manuscript of that prayer." " I never write
out my prayers," eaid the preacher. Well,"
said the reporter. I couldn't hear a word you
say." I wasn't praying to you, sir," replied
the preacher.
Amazed. The following incident occurred at
Oxford, Georgia: A vencrablo divine was rid
ing along down the street, and saw a vouthfal
son of 11am going down the street displaying a
flag of truce in the rear. The Doctor being near
sighted, supposed the African was about to lose
his handkerchief, and so called out to him. lie
looked amazed, but, catching hold of the flag, re
marked: Boss, .dat han'kerchief ia buttoned
'round my neck."
A young Parisian, noted for his grace and
readiness as a second in many duels, was asked
by a friend to accompany him to the mayor's
ofecc to aLx his signature as a witness to the
matrimonial registry. He consented, but when
tho scene was reached forgot himself. Just as the
mayor was ready for the formalities, he broke
out : Gentlemen, cannot this affair be arranged!
Is there no way of preventing this ead occur

Ia the Centennial Agricultural Hall there are
two immense bogs, stuffed, each bearing a placard
telling its age and weight; and with the name of
the man who prepared them for exhibition, fol
lowed by the word "taxidermist." A man and
his wife were looking at these with great interest.
After reading the placards, the woman said;
"Why, these are taxidermists. I thought they
were hogs." Her husband looked at the creat
ures with a puzzled expression, and then went
carefully over the placards, as if to satisfy him
self fully on the point. Finally he replied, "They
are hogs. Taxidermist is the name of the place
they came from."
In the north part of the city, as a veracious
reporter reports, a young lady and a young man
get on the steps of a Sunday evening and enter
into a contract. For each ehoooting star he is
to receive a kiss. On one of these interesting
occasions a half-hour passed away and not a
solitary star shot across the sky. But after a
while the cherry lips of the young lady parted
and ehe called her young man's attention to the
flying meteors that were about to escape his ob
servation; then she got to calling his attention to
the lightning bugs, and finally got him down to
steady work on the light of a lantern a man was
carrying about the depot where the trains were
switching. Artless girl !
Enjoyixo the Evening. It was in Iowa. They
were sitting on the front porch enjoying the even
ing air and gazing at the canopy of heaven, thick
ly studded with stars. "IIow incomprehensible,"
exclaimed Mr. Posonby " is the vastness of nature.
Each glittering orb of the myriads we now be
held is a sua more glorious than our own and the
center of a grand planetary system, and their cen
ters in their tarn revolve around other centers
still more magnificent. IIow wonderful are the
eternal laws which hold this universe of worlds in
their unchanging orbits, and ""Yes," eaid
Mrs. Posonby, "and the man didn't bring us half
enough ice to-day, and I'm just certain that cor
ned beef will spoil before morning. Did you or
der those mackerel to-day?"
A young man in the Sixth District had parted
Lis flaxen locks in the most impartial manner; if
there was a hair more on one side of his head
than on the other the difference could not be ob
served. He bad a tolerably good tenor voice,
ami he bad .mastered a new song. The moon
light shono brightly down on the greensward in
front of tho residence which held the maiden of
hia heart. The youth crept softly up tho side
walk, and let out his soul in melody: "Darling,
I'm waiting for thee, waiting for thee." He had
hardly completed the second chorus when a win
dow blind was cautiously opened, something white
was seen by the light of the moon, and an oldish
voice, not in harmony with the music, said: "It's
all right, young man, but you needn't wait nny
